(Rewatch) As with Lola, this sometimes doesn't feel as assertively "Fassbinder" as a lot of his other work, and almost risks falling completely into a sort of weird film noir pastiche thing, as visually stunning as it is (and again, it's one of his nicest looking). The plot is sort of weirdly generic but oddly disjointed at the same time. It almost feels at times like a Raoul Ruiz film that's actually trying to make sense.

A beautifully shot homage to classic noir. It's a compelling, swiftly-moving story of a sports journalist who gets involved with a washed-up actress. The high contrast black & white photography, liberal use of unusual wipes and striking musical choices are the highlights. I enjoyed watching it, but like a lot of Fassbinder, by the end I felt like "well, that's that". I think he manages to make his films very distinctive, but they rarely catch hold of me.

I'm surprised. I didn't like it at all. As others have pointed out, it looks pretty great but to me it felt wooden and bored me. Zechs performance is good but I got used to it after half of the runtime.

Rather unimaginative for a Fassbinder. Certain sections flourish on his mastery of the camera.

Each actor in this movie seemed to be on a roller coaster of good/bad acting, and Fassbinder himself even followed suit, not surprising with a heavy cocaine habit. Fassbidner also did nothing to make me relate to the characters. The last half hour was pretty decent, except it kept going for a couple minutes when it should have ended, ruining a good ending.

Very Fassbindery, full of style and melodrama but also heart and tragedy. Wonderful cinematography, I love how with a consistent tone he can convey glamour, despair and a noirish atmosphere. The two leads gave great performances, but the elderly couple really stood out. They were so vulnerable, yet charming and with a hint of coyness that matches the tone of the whole film. The flashback structure is a bit annoying but it's not hard to keep straight and it bears fruit with the excellent ending.

Slightly surreal noir of kafkaesque quality. Absolutely gorgeous b/w photography paired with ingenious set design draws you into it's twisted world of dominance and desire.

Beautifully shot, but i think it circles around the drain a bit too long towards the end.

follows the life of a former big-name actress, now a drug addict. is more coherent and less ridiculous than the previous fassbinder i saw but still doesn't mesh particularly well. but it's interesting.

Another Sunset Blvd. Unlike Sunset, the pathology of the main character, Vosst, is a contrivance of societal misunderstandings and stereotypes, a result of a simple anxiety rather than a complex, disturbing split in reality. Gradually, she is, by these forces, pushed deeper into a delusional world, into the world of forgetting: the world of post-war Germany. But it all seems made in a hurry, as if based off of a script written on the back of a coaster. Of course, this is because it likely was.

One of the most surreal movies I've ever seen. I don't really have a lot to say except that I like it, and the photography is outstanding.

Despite being loosely based on the story of Sybille Schmitz, there are interesting parallels between Veronika Voss - being his penultimate film - and Fassbinder himself, who died of a bad drug interaction not long after. Here, drugs are portrayed as an instrument used by predatory doctors to exploit washed-up showbiz nouveau-riche. Unfortunately, not among his better films.

High-ish rating is almost strictly because of camera and a few memorable bits of dialogue. Where it falters is in its attempt at tragedy, which lacks a dynamism and consequently feels hollow and unaffecting. I do wonder if this effect is intentional, perhaps to bring us closer to empathizing with the sedated titular character. It ultimately created what felt like a sluggish pace and has to be the least enthralling Fassbinder I have seen thus far.

Very interesting cynical period drama with thriller/noirish aspects. The period aspects go beyond sets and costumes; it looks like it's something that was made in 1955 to the point where I wonder if they used period cameras, etc. The only thing that feels more modern is the music. Voss is an interesting character. Would make interesting double bill with Sunset Blvd. The psychiatrist's office, all white with extreme lighting, was an interesting set. Failed to totally draw me in, though.
