Diego Maradona

The passionate Argentinian commentary during "That Goal" against England brought tears to my eyes. And I'm a Team England fan.

Rarely has a documentary felt so much like the subject itself. Butch, manipulating, and highly entertaining.

The score I gave is influenced more positively by Maradona than the formal/narrative qualities of the movie. Having said that I still appreciate Kapadia's rearranging the material at his hand, emphasizing certain moments, "zooming" into them, and extracting a tragic cycle of success and decline. In a way, Kapadia puts a remarkable cinematic argument: there is no creation ex nihilo, it is only re-ordering the images, seeing does not need looking, you can see what others have already looked at.

Well-crafted and clearly extensively researched documentary is a little too "inside baseball" (or football) for someone uninitiated/ignorant of the man and his game; for this viewer, the highlights were the peeks into Maradona's spotty personal life, though these were dealt with fairly simply and superficially, even as the epilogue provided a quietly moving follow-through. No doubt a more impressive and stimulating journey the more familiar you are with Maradona himself.

Kapadia knows how to do a biographical documentary. Great player and a troubled human being.

Disappointing. Almost exclusively focuses on Maradona's time in Italy but while undoubtedly the key years of his career, there was so much more before and after his time in Napoli that I was interested in. Also much of what was covered was fairly well known to anyone who showed an interest in the man back in the 90s.

Rise, shine, crash and burn. I never understood why they treated him like a god and this documentary will not fully explain. But you will get a glimpse of what fame really was like before social media and how people were losing their mind over some talented individual.

Pretty by the numbers compilation, but I just can't not like peak Maradona in such beautiful images -- as well as his complex relationship with a city (its people, its organized crime, its grudge with Northern Italy) through the years. Maradona's 80s is just all we've heard and seen and more -- heaven, hell, doom, nirvana, love, hate, glory, shame, extravaganza, pleasure, pain.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #13: A rather tame docu on one of football's greatest bad boys. Its put together very well with some wonderful footage, but I think his two years in Barca would have been a better subject to cover. Its still fuck Maradona for THAT goal.
