Set in 1959 Baltimore, writer-director Barry Levinson's debut film focuses on a group of pals on the brink of adulthood who find solace at the local diner. The late-night banter between groom-to-be Eddie (Steve Guttenberg), best man Billy (Tim Daly), womanizer Boogie (Mickey Rourke), music addict Shrevie (Daniel Stern) and quirky Modell (Paul Reiser) ranges from girls to growing up and getting old. Ellen Barkin and Kevin Bacon also appear.

Pretty decent but not as amazing as some people claim it to be. Loved all the scenes with Mickey Rourke, pretty easy to see why he became so huge after this, just a natural born movie star. Great portrayal of this period of a man's life, could relate. Wouldn't have minded to see more Bacon in here, but I feel that way about many things in my life.

a charming low key drama, never really trying to be a blockbuster, but a simple down to earth coming of age tale. it features a host of young faces of people early in their careers, and i really appreciated the sentimental story here.

Barry Levinson makes fine movies and movies that are not good. This is the former, which relies on dialogue to nail a generation and confused youth at a turning point in their lives. The iconic scenes are still quite good, while the rest doesn't quite have the emotional heft to elevate the film past serviceable.

Fellini's "I Vitelloni" is clearly the inspiration for this really wonderful film about being young and stupid. It forces me to admit that Barry Levinson is capable of making a masterpiece.

This kind of movie heavily depends on how interesting and entertaining you find the characters, and I never really liked any of them all that much, so it ended up being more tedious than anything to me. There were some interesting parts and it's not horrible or anything, but the characters I didn't actively dislike generally bored me a bit. It's well done for this kind of thing, but meh.

Diner is a great coming of age movie except this movie is a little farther along than normal. All of these young men have been best friends forever and, in many ways, because of that friendship their movement to adulthood has been stunted. The acting in this movie is top-notch. I was really surprised by the performances because I have some of these people pigeon-holed into certain categories and this movie smashed those notions. I would definitely watch this again and again.

One of the better coming-of-age movies. It feels like it's lifted off the pages of a real person's life.

Underwhelming, largely because it blows its self-critical first two acts by letting all these guys off the hook in the end. i just don't buy it. Which is a shame, because the diner (and elsewhere) banter between these guys is well-rendered, something of a bygone age in many ways.

A good ensemble "coming-of-age"-style film. It felt like the cast really had been best friends all their lives. Ultimately, you'll probably like this film based on whether you had friends similar to these guys (I didn't), and whether you like "slice of life" stories, here a week in 1950s Baltimore. Neat to see some of these actors at the very start of their careers.

One of the classic hangout movies. Besides, any film that quotes 'Sweet Smell of Success' has good shot at a mention in my cool book.

bir arkadaş ortamını kurmakta ve mekanın ilişkiler üzerindeki etkisini anlatmada oldukça başarılı. sıradan'ı umursayan tavrı ve yaşamın ufak telaşlarına odaklanabilişi, konu aldığı zamanı yansıtmayı başarışıyla beraber hikayenin ele aldığı tekilliği daha evrensel bir insan gerçekliğine çıkarmayı başarabiliyor. kısacası bir filmden şahsen beklediğim birçok şeyi hikaye ve anlatım yönünden başarıyor.

This naturalistically acted movie isn't extravagant or lengthy, but it's the kind of minor, truthful, enjoyable movie that should never go out of fashion, even now that the tradition of sequels and blockbusters has been thoroughly established. It's not quite seamless, yet its intermittent patchiness is part of its allure. There's an exhilaration in watching a gifted hatchling filmmaker skate on thin ice.

I could have watched this group of characters that were going nowhere fast even longer. Sure, there's barely any meat to the stories, but the cast is great and it's fun to see such an early example of this type of 'friends just hanging out and wasting time on trivial stuff' film.

The writing and character development are strong, but the film does drag fairly often. Overall, though, it's a very well-made movie.

Thinking about it, there are a lot of funny things in this film. One of my favorites: The kid who memorized the entirety of Sweet Smell of Success and goes around reciting it all day. Great ensemble, too. But Mickey Rourke seems strangely predatory and that kind of creeped me out. Fun Kevin Bacon role and the rest of cast is good too.

Slow, Slow, Slow, Slow, Slow. Painfully slow. Not just slow but slow without a point. For a movie that felt like it was around 3 hours long it sure managed to remain shallow. Its almost like it was afraid to really dive deep into any of the plot points. I must admit though, the acting was good enough to make these dull characters a bit more likeable. Overall an ok debut for director Berry Levinson. He managed to pump enough charm in this movie to keep me from totally hating it.

Definitely good. Probably would have been in my top 10 favorites if I had seen it in 1982, since it seems like it was one of the first coming-of-age movies of its type.

Takes way too long to tie up every single loose end in the final act (including two music-centric scenes, back to back). Cute movie, but given that it's a movie from 30 years ago about young adults from 50 years ago, time hasn't been too kind on it. Judd Apatow's comedies basically are a rehash of this.

I really like these slice-of-life movies set in the past, usually about the director's life. Except when nothing really happens and none of the characters are likeable besides Guttenberg, which is baffling.

There are plenty of charming, great moments and scenes in this, but otherwise the whole film is middling, feeling far too long and yet not deep enough either. Neither does it help that, by the end, nothing truly significant happens to the male characters and that a couple of them are unsympathetic and one dimensional.

Nearly every scene is an example of how guys are jerks, and yet the film somehow balances that well with a dose of light comedy and some reasonable dramatic arcs. It's enjoyable to watch and has a lot of great pieces, though the whole doesn't entirely come together.

Watchable, but rarely rises above mediocrity. It features Steve Guttenberg of all people mocking The Seventh Seal, which is actually a funnier movie than this one. I didn't think much of the casting either. I've always liked Rourke, but here he's just wrong. And he looks like he's wearing makeup, which is very distracting. Bacon just comes off like a tool. Stern is good, though, and Reiser surprisingly didn't annoy me.

Mickey Rourke is so magnetic in this movie, it's easy to see how he became a star after this. Unfortunately he's the only watchable part of this movie.

Levinson's I VITELLONI is enjoyable, unsentimental and very funny, but behind the banter the film sheds a revealing light on its milieu. It features great work by an excellent young cast (career-best performances for several of them) who present a diverse range of characters. Its virtues seemed barely to have been recognised at the time (Pauline Kael, however, loved it), but its influence is well articulated in this article by S. L.
