Dinner in America

Gallner was a bit too aggro over every situation so it was interesting to see him get his ass kicked by a couple of skinny high school jocks. Skeggs was cute and played a 20 year old outcast well, though the friends we meet at the end were quite normal. Totally appropriate that a punk rocker is secretly an upper middle class kid. Lea Thompson had a fun but short cameo. I had a hard time placing the time period. Fav scenes: smoking on the roof with Kev; playing at the arcade.

Based on the blurb, I expected more... I don't know, epic journeying. That said, I do like the Eat Your Dinner And Be Grateful theme. This is a charming 00s indie throwback, and even if the punk of it turns out to be more Moldy Peaches than Dead Kennedys, there's a sincerity beneath the jokes that carries it.

A second-rate copy of Hesher, without all the hopefulness of that film's main character. Unlike Hesher, this one is full of pedestrian, cliche writing and unlikable protagonists. The overall commentary is just more of the same typical, woke, anti-American bullshit--which ironically, is too American for my taste. I'm sure it will appeal to a lot of people, but I found it to be tedious and obnoxious. But as bad as the story and dialog are, the filming itself is at times exceptional.

This is a fun, life affirming tale about two rebellious teens who get their own back, getting even on those who've bullied them. There's plenty of very strong language, so be aware of that - the characters are quite punk rock-ish. Its a fun film, a gritty and urban film. Yes, I'd recommend this film.

Dinner in America is a hilarious, nasty and surprisingly touching comedy. It's especially nice to see a movie where you actually care for the flawed but very likeable characters.

Although this doesn't really achieve that authenticity that is typically the hallmark of a good indie flick, it's still interesting for its somewhat cliché characters and ultimate romanticism.

Despite its flaws, "Dinner in America" is an arresting and celebratory take on misfits finding each other, with a distinct and provocative force that captures the essence of punk rock.
