Dirty God

Often uncomfortable, perhaps too miserable, yet in the midst of the suffering there are these hopeful and sensitive moments of true, genuine profundity delivered with naturalistic beauty that serve to make the film worth it all. Awful and exquisite, subtle and rending.

Despite a convincing and naturalistic performance from Knight, this frustrating drama feels undernourished, creating a slapdash, incomplete character study, and then saddling the narrative with plot points which are either inconclusive or irrelevant (an interlude with a best friend's partner as they both accompany her for plastic surgery the most head scratching!) Given we never really get to know this character, it makes it difficult to sympathise with her except in the most superficial terms.
