Divorzio all'Italiana is such a great movie. From Mastroianni's masterful leading role to the witty and creative story, it's one of the most interesting and refreshing "romantic comedies" I've ever seen. Rich with Italian culture and a funny tone, the story is one of the best aspects of the whole movie. Paced well, acted extraordinarily, and clearly written by a master of the medium, this film stands as one of the best Italian movies of that era, which really says something.

A "comedy" about an Italian baron, 37, who schemes to murder his wife with the minimum legal penalty so he can get into bed with his foxy teenage first cousin. The wife is a bit of a shrew, but she's quite attractive (despite the "frumpy" makeup), she clearly adores him, and she always wants to get busy with him between the sheets. Am I just being a puritanical American here, or is this totally sick? Evidently Mastroianni's character is supposed to be a lovable scoundrel, but he's a vain jerkoff

A clever and very watchable comedy. Germi employs a host of stylistic tricks that manage to spice up the experience rather than detract from it.

As fresh as its day. Clever rapid camera movements, careful study of the surroundings, consistent naivity, a little mix of different genre elements and not the forget Mastroianni at his prime all play out nicely. A rare treat if not unique.

Considered naughty in its day. A fast, racy romp.

A truly wicked comedy. Germi seems to delight in lambasting Italian culture and family life. Together he and Mastroianni turn the long-faced, lethargic, and murderous aristocrat - not a very admirable character - into a sympathetic lead.

Sometimes silly, sometimes wicked, always funny and biting satire of Sicilian culture. From the largest to tiniest detail - everything is just excellently implemented. The audience pan in a crowded theater showing of La Dolce Vita is one of my all-time favs.

A love story besides Lolita appealing to our darker side. A funny realistic comedy about love and expecations.

The cinematography and soundtrack are both excellent, but Mastroianni steals the show with his oddly endearing mannerisms, showing he can make a vaguely unsympathetic character very engaging and entertaining. A bit melodramatic in its first half for what is essentially a satire, the films comes into its own around 45 minutes in. The craze caused by La Dolce Vita is an unquestionable high point.

Hilarious and scathing, with a fantastic performance from Marcello Mastroianni. One detail I love is Fefe's secretive sister and her fiancee who never want to get caught in the act even though no one seems to give a shit.

The first third, which sets up the movie, is rather slow and more than a little creepy, but the rest, dominated by Mastroianni is a great dark comedy. An very well executed plot with real style.

A good, well-paced farce. That is to say, it sets up the situation slowly, then gradually picks up the pace until it is moving fast towards the end, but you can't quite tell when it hit absurd. Mastroianni is slick, bored, slightly creepy, and great.

A criminally underrated take down of chauvinism and patriarchy. Undoubtedly a must-see.

This darkly comic tale of a middle-aged scoundrel's pursuit of his teenage cousin doubles as a sharp satire, highly critical of antiquated Italian laws and customs and featuring a number of hilarious Sicilian caricatures. The story and dialogue are phenomenal, and Mastroianni's performance is sheer perfection.

The story of a coward bourgeois who gets away with it. I'm always puzzled by these italian movies that seem to lampoon some aspects of culture (rightfully so) while embracing some others (it's misogynistic in the sense that only the male lead is given a voice and all female characters are very one-dimensional).. Example: one can question the use of makeup on Rosalia to make her uglier... to make her a less likeable character and to make us sympathize with Fernandino?

Starts out a little slow, with (not enough) humor sprinkled in at odd places, making me wonder if I wanted to sit through the whole thing. Somewhere around the middle, it starts hitting its stride as the tangled web starts to unravel. Mastroianni is excellent as the bored aristocrat that you despise but wonder if he'll get his in the end.
