I'm surprised I enjoyed this as much as I did. I think it compliments The Shining very well and even makes that one a better movie in some ways. Great character motivations and really solid acting helps too. McGregor is wonderful, Furgeson is solid, and the young Kyleigh Curran is great. Beautifully filmed and well paced with some excellent character development as well. It's probably one of my new favorites from 2019. Definitely give a chance if you can.

I haven't read the book. I liked this, it doesn't feel like a straight up sequel to The Shining, but the overlaps in the story are managed reasonably well. That's probably the key here - Flanagan is clearly capable and keeps everything interesting and credible without too much in the way of histrionics. I liked McGregor in the lead, and young Curran was very impressive. This has some good ideas, and could probably have existed successfully without the Overlook shenanigans. Decent.

Was it silly? Yes. Did it overstay its welcome by about an hour? Sure. But there's nothing in this world that says 'Hey look at me' like the murder of a child, and let me just tell you, that scene is going to make you sit up in your chair and join Team Shining. I thought this would be 'memberberries, but the implementation of the Overlook Hotel worked really well, and one decision to replace an actor and not digitally de-age him, brought a tear to my eye. I enjoyed the shit out of this movie.

As one of the most acclaimed horror films of all time by one of the most acclaimed directors, I can admire the balls on Flannagan for putting out a sequel, but my expectations were low for another reason, I just didn't think that "The Shining" was all that hot. "Doctor Sleep," though, is a different beast altogether, and either in spite of that, or because of that, I can't quite tell, it is an excellent horror flick, one that I can ardently recommend.

A Stephen King movie so grounded that it feels closer to The Shawshank Redemption than to The Shining. The scares are deeply human as you watch Danny battle his multiple childhood traumas as well as his anxiety on mentoring a kid facing the same supernatural horrors he once did. It all makes for a great metaphor on being an adult child of an alcoholic. But it's fun as hell, too--especially the final villain showdown and the novel-like chapter divisions. Highly recommended.

A lot of King and a bit of meaningless Kubrick imitation. Really nothing to do with the 1980 film: instead, a story about vampires and a teenage girl with magical powers who slays them. While Kubrick's film carefully manufactured an atmosphere and seemed to be focused on inhabiting the various mental conditions of its protagonists, this pointless sequel is simply one more standard, unhorrific tale with plenty of explanation and a lot of clichés about overcoming trauma. Highly orange and teal.

I was very impressed, it surpassed any and all expectations I had for a sequel to The Shining. Also, as the father of a seven year old, I will never watch this again. Recommended, but not a pleasant ride. Came pretty close to walking out to be honest. Also stayed and still recommended so make of that what you will. Very Stephen King friendly, and waits the right amount to go full "The Shining Show!"

Overlook Hotel: "...Torrance? Haven't heard that name in years." For me, a poignant reminder that King's work is often less about straight-up Horror and more about redemption from trauma: the tensest moments in this film had more to do with temptations of Danny's alcoholism than any soul vampires. The film is so assured in its approach, and such it's own work, it doesn't diminish my feelings about the book or movie of The Shining at all. That's a real accomplishment.

probably as apt an adaptation as possible, given that the novel was a crap idea to begin with. redrum radars vs. the manson shining-vapers. go, king. well...i came to cringe about the kubrick tie-ins, which admittedly offered meticulous set design...but man, was everything 'overlook' reduced to theme park ride gimmickry. at least flanagan left his hands off original material or cgi-shenanigans, although his stand ins for original characters were just as laughable. leave the classics alone ffs!

At 3 hours, Doctor Sleep is an ambitious attempt to reconcile the novel and film canons, while still delivering an engaging experience. The 3 act (6 chapter) structure effectively shifts the focus between characters; Danny & Rose, Abra, and the Overlook respectively. While some of the content is darker, the overall outlook of the film is more positive than The Shining, especially in regards to alcoholism. It’s less technically impressive, but more engaging; and I preferred it.

The bits that felt like more than just sequel-through-the-motions in the novel - Dan's struggle with his memories and alcohol, the True Knot's backstories and MO - are toned way down, leaving us with a fully competent thriller that never leans TOO hard on its vastly superior predecessor, but also never really digs as deep as it did. A solid King adaptation by a solid director; no more, no less.

If you think of it as a sequel to The Shining, you will come out disappointed. It's more of a continuation than anything. Flanagan, yet again, proves himself to be one of the few directors who can competently adapt King novels. Doctor Sleep fills out an almost three hour runtime with interesting characters, perilous situations, and throwbacks that will make Shining fans giggle in their seats. I can see why many would hate this, but I didn't.

Surprisingly efficient in continuing the world that started in The Shining. It's long but it doesn't really hurt it in the end, nor does the typical horror petering out. All in all, it's just got a good enough cast, and interesting enough tale to tell.

This film tries to be a sequel to The Shining movie (which is very different from original novel), as well as a faithul adaptation of the Doctor Sleep novel and also tries to pay tribute to the Shining novel. The outcome is as good as it can be. I'd personally favor a direct adaptation of the Doc. Sleep novel, which it's ending i find rather satisfying. The movie choose an ending similar to The Shining novel, which Kubrick abandoned in the movie, so it kind of closes the circle in it's own way.

Watched the three hour version, and boy, it was alright. It falls into a strange limbo where it's going by a Stanley Kubrick heavily revised version of the prequel story while continuing it with the Stephen King (and only) version of the book, merging two vastly different storytelling sensibilities. And what you get is somewhere between a superhero movie and an artsy horror movie, going further than most mainstream movies will go, but asking you to take seriously a lot of cheese.

I don’t think I’ll ever really be able to mentally accept this as a “canonical” sequel to The Shining the way I can accept, say, Blade Runner 2049 or Creed. It’s just too different genre wise, the original claustrophobic slow-burn psychological horror where this one is more of a horror-flavored dark fantasy adventure flick. But, that said - I enjoyed it! It held my attention without any antsyness or phone-checking for 2.5 hours, something it seems few new movies do lately.

I found it very difficult to take the steam vampire baddies seriously, but it's a well-made film, and it's pretty well-acted too. However, when you make a sequel to one of the seminal horror films of all time, why not make a film that is in the same vein? (Obviously the answer is that King opted to write a very different second book, but my criticism still stands.)

(Director’s Cut) Really enjoyed this. I appreciate the fact that it’s not a rehash of the first like most sequels. Doctor Sleep does it’s own thing, and it’s fascinating to watch. Mike Flanagan remains one of my favorite directors today, and the cast is respectable. One of the more unique horror films I’ve seen as well. Best seen as a Fantasy/Horror instead of something to scare you with. And it’s best not to compare it to The Shining, it’s a very different film altogether.

Surprisingly touching. It starts slow but gains enough momentum eventually for a satisfying crescendo. Noteworthy on a nuts and bolts level: the psychic stuff was all effectively portrayed, and the baddies' wardrobe was ridiculous. It feels like a misstep to put so much effort into mimicking / recreating parts of the original (film version of) The Shining instead of doing one's own interpretation of the hotel and the events there, and Dan's ending was disappointing but, overall, I recommend it.

I watched this as the second part of a double bill with Kubrick's Shining and this may be the reason why I'm so conflicted about DS, as it simultaneously works and fails as a direct sequel which probably explains why they didn't clearly market it as such. Unfortunately, it works best for viewers knowledgeable of the 1980 movie, so it was a conundrum for the marketing team for sure. I wonder would this have been better suited and more successful as a Netflix limited series?

I consider Doctor Sleep to be one of the most entertaining films of the year, but technicalities keep it from being better. Like the fact that there's just so much happening all at once. You begin to feel that "adaptation" feeling more so than you feel like it's a movie, especially if you watch the Director's Cut, which is 3 hours long. It's definitely entertaining, but it's somewhat flawed.

The best bits of a good Stephen King story without King's atrocious writing. While Kubrick made The Shining his own film, Flanagan distills the best of King (i.e. his ideas and inspired mythmaking) into a well-shot and well-acted yarn. Best of all, he keeps the whole damn thing just multi-faceted enough to distract you from the fact that the pulpy narrative sits on very rigid and very well-travelled rails.

for all its messiness (i'd offer that mapping the terrain of the adolescent mind requires some play amongst the work) and a slightly vanilla lead performance, a smart, deeply felt adaptation which understands that danny's redemption from generational trauma doubles as a reconciliation between king's story and kubrick's brutal bastardisation. there's moving symmetry between this ending and king's response to their screening: "you've warmed my feelings toward the kubrick film."

It takes too long to set things up - over an hour - because it maintains the "Kubrickian" (i.e. slow) pace which many fans consider "suspenseful", but the middle 40 minutes is RIVETING with good vs. evil & a lot of surprising twists. The last third comes up w/ a clever reason to return to Shining territory but much of it also plays like mandated pandering as in "Remember how cool this was?" especially since the first 2/3rds is so different. The astral projection visuals are also standouts.

My biggest worry for this film -- that it wouldn't earn its connection to The Shining -- was easily squashed, but Doctor Sleep still struggles at times to become truly good entirely on its own merits. The deliberate pacing and atmospheric horror from director Mike Flanagan work very well, as do the performances from the cast. However, the more supernatural elements when compared to the Kubrick film feel disjointed and make me understand more fully why they were originally left behind.

Starts decently enough, showing the sins of the father passed onto the child with a grown-up Danny struggling with alcoholism, which the film somewhat intelligently relates to his 'shining' abilities. After one properly horrifying and upsetting moment, the film soon devolves further and further into nonsensical blockbusterisation, before it just starts sucking The Shining's dick. There are a few scenes early on in this movie that point to it being an effectively creepy horror yarn, and Rebecca Ferguson does a good job of portraying the eerily restrained antagonist. However, the source material doesn't allow for it to follow it's own path. Had it been it would have fared much better. As it is once the action moves to the Overlook things take a nosedive and you can't help but worry that the tawdry finale might ruin your enjoyment of Kubrick's film next time you watch it.

As OUTBREAK (1995) was to DR. STRANGELOVE (1964), as 2010 (1984) was to 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968), so this film continues what is apparently Hollywood's only possible response to Kubrick: domestication. Flanagan has done better than this. This is probably more faithful to the spirit of King, though I haven't read either of the relevant books and merely assume King's conventionality might be informing things.

Certainly not a necessary watch for fans of the book or The Shining movie, but pretty good none the less. Cast is very solid, and the tie-ins to the original movie aren't overused, although it starts to toe the line towards the end. The actors they used to replace some of the characters were mostly ok (except for one glaring one). Having read the book there were a few parts I enjoyed that were glossed over in the film. Kind of a bummer but I can mostly understand why they did it.

Character moments extend past the point&the nostalgia-drenched finale @ 45 minutes basks too long in exploring&rethinking whats gone before.cant hate this, because its an interesting story and Danny's arc elevates it from John Carpenter style camp, but just not enough impact, not enough depth, not enough new to justify dragging it out. Even with 30 minutes cleaned off the top, would be an ideal horror-adventure, bordering on classic. Like a ghost, Doctor Sleep lingers where it should move on...

So much better than expected. It's a fun, thrilling ride from start to finish with nice tie-ins to "The Shining." It doesn't try to imitate and rehash its predecessor, but instead goes its own direction and has its own unique vision. This is not some unnecessary, train wreck of a film trying to cash in on some classic horror from the past. This is no Terminator 6. Instead, we can rest easy as it sits comfortably alongside its predecessor.

Doctor Sleep is an okay horror film if you subtract Kubrick's The Shining from it. I can also see how DS works thematically as a sequel to King's The Shining. But trying to pair what happens for the first 3/4 of the running time with the Kubrick version fails, leaving you with a disjointed mess that feels like it is checking off referential boxes for audiences in the last act. Also if you prefer this to The Shining I hope the woman from Room 237 finds you when you're taking a shit in the dark.

Really an accomplishment the way it manages to be faithful to both King's book and Kubrick's film. The film gives us plenty of time with all the characters involved, expands upon the Shining in all the right ways, delivers some really good tension and drama, and while retreading the Overlook sounds like it might not carry the same weight, it's exactly as good as I could have hoped. I only saw this because Parasite was sold out but it was pretty damn good! the slavish devotion to the source material is apparent even as someone who hasn't read it, though the clear deference to King's vision — that The Shining is about a child coming to understand the destruction wrought by substance abuse — is commendable. come great character choices by the actors, too; Ferguson's subtle choice to decay her accent to suggest her functional immortality is brilliant. she's so hot. fuck.

When they got to the hotel I was very in, I love seeing people in art return to the scene of their trauma after a long period, but then after the initial walkthrough it just felt very hollow. It was nice to see The Overlook again - if not its spectral retinue, reduced to comic book characters. I wish the film could have found more moments like Danny meeting with the ghost of Jack... but then the source was ludicrous to begin with, at the level of bad fanfiction. It's amazing Flanagan was able to salvage even this much out of that wreck. Per King himself, "You can't polish a turd," but this represented a good faith effort in that enterprise. A couple notches above what I'd expected.

It's a decent film, but a sequel that came way too late. The expanded story and the focus on "the power" were good to see, and the performances were pretty good too. The problem is that it's a sequel to the iconic 'The Shining' and it felt a little forced and jammed in. Ugh, make it stop. This was excruciatingly boring and stupid.

Imdb'de masterpiece the shining'den 1 puancık düşük olduğunu görünce tüm sinemasever özürlülerin annelerini elden geçirdim affedin beni ama aptal bile değil günümüz seyircisi. İğreniyorum sizden aq

Thoroughly televisual in its aesthetic and ambitions. While The Shining was ambiguous, esoteric and poetic, this approaches the unknowable mysteries of death through po-faced explanations of what resembles nothing so much as a Dungeons & Dragons magic system. Ferguson's unintimidating performance as a sort of suburban Romani cosplayer and Flanagan's complete lack of any eye for effective shots (the Overlook looks positively dinky, and not in an especially meaningful way) don't help matters much.

Doctor Sleep is maybe too much of a good thing. The part of Doctor Sleep that is actually the novel is pretty good. The part that has to follow up Kubrick's The Shining is too many winks and shoe-horned references. It's a fine thriller, superhero (I swear it's not stupid), and horror mash-up. This is the material that Flanagan should continue to direct because I've always thought his horror elements have always existed as an extension to the story and not the main crux.

I despise the beginning and end of this film. It's one thing to tie your story to Stanley Kubrick's film. Playing Kubrick cosplay with none of his film's style is borderline offensive. This has none of that film's bright, arid menace. It looks cheap and over lit in a way that older shot on video films did, with sets that are noticeably too small and cramped, recreating that film's superficial style while having the aura of a porn parody of "The Shining".

The Shining'in devam filmi. Doğa üstü güçleri olan Dan, yeni doğa üstü çocuk olan Abra ile telepatik konuşmaya başlıyor. Fakat ruh ve sihir emici düşmanlara karşı da savaşıyorlar. Kalan sağlam bizimdir ilerleyen konu, The Shining korkutucu oteliyle finale gidiyor. Açık kapı bırakılsa da yeni The Shining çıkmaz. La kızım evdeki kaşıkları niye tavana sapladın? Pastayı mı ellettiricen?

I liked it as someone who has never read a Stephen King novel or watched The Shining.

There's a lot of hate for this flick, but I think Doctor Sleep deserves praise for being a competent sequel released almost 40 years after it's predecessor. It manages to explain more about "The Shining" then the actual film of the same title does. Performances are fairly strong as well.

Coming from a big fan of The Shining, McGregor was really good, but I just don't think I liked the cult backbone of this movie. There is some fun and some gruesomeness. But nothing totally gripped me, and my goodness this was long.

Exceeded expectations on some levels, dovetailed with the original nicely.

The best King adaptation in 20 years. Flanagan is now on my list of filmmakers to watch. A wholly engrossing horror/thriller, magnificent performances, and an impossibly good compromise between King's original works and Kubrick's seminal film. I adored this movie. Even though the last act can be indulgent, it earns that right by cultivating its own cinematic identity.

I'd put this in the same trash heap of pointless reboots with Solo: A Star Wars Story. Like, remember how cool it was in Kubrick's movie? Let's be reminded of all the scenes we liked but in this newly formatted superhero style revenge tale. I can't escape super hero movies! Help! Redrum!

Hem King Shining romanına hem de Kubrick filmine devam kapısı açan başarılı bir korku filmi.
