Dodge City. A wide-open cattle town run by Jeff Surrett. Even going on a children's Sunday outing is not a safe thing to do. What the place needs is a fearless honest Marshal. A guy like Wade Hatton, who helped bring the railroad in. It may not help that he fancies Abbie Irving, who won't have anything to do with him since he had to shoot her brother. But that's the West. A fantastic western. Errol Flynn is magnificent, as his transition from swashbuckler to western seems effortless, and he proves he's just adept with a gun as he is with a sword. This is a must see for all western fans as it paved the way for the genr...(read more) e.

Nothing particularly noteworthy here, just a solid Western with a typically charismatic Errol Flynn doing his thing to win the heart of Olivia de Havilland.

Rip-roaring adventure that's an early example of stunning three-strip Technicolor. All of the characters are archetypes, but the movie is so fun and pretty, it's easy to overlook how shallow it turns out to be.

Unfortunately static - in both narrative and visual construction - even when compared to contemporaneous Curtiz/Flynn/de Havilland/Western/Warner Bros. studio productions. In the ripe, Golden Year of 1939, Dodge City is merely a benchwarmer.

Two problems: One, this was released in 1939, often considered one of the best years for movies, so comparatively, it's fighting a tough battle. Two, this tried hard to throw everything into the pot -- a little romance, a little drama, a little adventure, a little Western, a little buddy cop.... And trying to do all that makes it a little weak in all areas. It's still a fun movie (I loved the riotous bar brawl, even though it didn't add much to the plot).

Errol Flynn is the most unconvincing sheriff ever.

I had a wonderful time watching Dodge City (1939)! And since A-list starts are now doing wild west movies, it's time for the full Errol Flynn treatment! A wonderful adventure epic in magical Technicolor! This is the type of western that simply mixes everything in one massive package! While I wouldn't call Flynn one of the most natural gunslingers, he pulls it off gracefully. One of those spectacles where you can just lean back and enjoy endlessly!
