2001
Documentary

Sub-titled "The Birth of Extreme", this documetary takes a look at the transformation of skateboarding from its former image as a land-bound pastime for surfers to its status today as an extreme and acrobatic sport in its own right. Starting from the California surf community of Dogtown, the film follows the evolution of modern skateboarding through it's 70's heyday, its decline during the 80's, and its eventual (and highly lucrative) return in the 90's. Great doc. It's too bad that it will always have to live down the awful Hollywood flick they made out of it.

DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS will probably please almost anyone who even has a passing interest in skateboarding, or just well-crafted documentaries. If you are a skater yourself, it's absolutely essential viewing.

Excellent look at the 70's revival of skateboarding. These crazy assholes ushered in the modern age. A good companion to the Lords of Dogtown film.

I'm biased because I'm nothing if not a skateboarder. But, I'm confident that this documentary transcends the subject (the way all great docs do) and would be fascinating to anybody that doesn't actively hate skateboarding. The personalities are huge, the dawn of skateboarding was cool, and the direction itself is strong.

Sit back and enjoy this sentimental ride through the history of skateboarding in and its most notorious early protagonists. This is much deeper than your a normal skateboard movie. It also boasts a brilliant soundtrack.

A great doc on an important piece of pop culture history. Loses a point for having a bit too many gimmicky effects Awesome soundtrack too, until the end where it delves in to the ambient crap that makes me want to fall asleep when I try and watch most skating videos. Still not as boring as surfing videos (if you share my views on the boredom of watching surfing, the surf stuff is really only prevalent in the first 30 minues)

Solid documentary about the '70's skateboarding revolution by one of the revolutionaries, Stacy Peralta. This inspired the equally solid film "Lords of Dogtown". Both of which grant a sense of nostalgia. It's fun, here in the documentary, to see the archive footage coupled with interviews with some of the skaters today as grown men, too.

I don't skateboard, so I had a hard time giving a crap about anything that went on in this one... mediocre performances.

Really enjoyed this, especially as a skate fan and probably enough interest even if you're not. even as someone who loves skateboarding it does border on the hyperbolic at times, which probably is unavoidable considering it's made by stacy peralta himself. There is no question this one small group of riders changed worldwide youth culture for decades to come.

At one point these idiots talk about how people found the skateboarders dangerous and frightening - yeah right, about as frightening as cottage cheese

Decent documentary on the origins of modern skateboarding. A must-see for anyone interested in skateboarding, with a DIY style typical of the Z-boys. It's easily to see the humble beginnings of these now legendary skaters, and interesting to see where they have all ended up.
