Ed Mahogany. Murphy as Rudy Ray Moore is so likable that the film suffers from a lack meaningful conflict. The weird intrigue of Tommy Wiseau's background or Ed Wood's inner conflicts are pretty much replaced with barreling forwards. The initial battles to rise as a comedian and then comedy album star make the entire film segment feel redundant since he's been overcoming odds from the get go. Still fun to watch and great performances all around. I'd rather watch this arc than Edgar Allen Poe's.

After my own little journey into the life and works of the man, the myth, the legend, "Dolemite" himself, Mr. Rudy Ray Moore, this movie was a wonderfully fun little watch. Although, as others have said, the movie kind of lacks any tangible conflict that isn't immediately dismissed or overcome, which kind of seems to weaken the film's overall arc a bit. However, Eddie Murphy and company make all the characters so likable that you just can't help but get swept up for the motherfuckin' ride.

Quite a lot of fun, and rather heart-warming in its own way. I haven't seen a lot of blaxploitation films, but this has certainly increased my curiosity. The main draw is obviously Eddie Murphy; if you like sweary, swaggering Eddie Murphy, you'll like this. I do, and I did; it felt like he was back to playing to his strengths. This was a respectful telling of the story of one of his clear influences, packed with loads of great swearing. Most enjoyable.

Since Moore's early "rapping" relies so heavily on the shock comedy of profanities to be funny, the first 20 minutes of this feels like it's going to be a painful slog. He was very much the Andrew Dice Clay of his day. But when he gets the idea to make a movie things start getting very entertaining & very funny (esp if you've seen how bad the movie is). It's very much a story about someone who DID pull himself up by his bootstraps & whose success was more the result of persistence than talent.

I've never felt such nostalgia for something I didn't actually grow up with. This movie does an excellent job capturing the silliness and excitement that Rudy Ray Moore brought to the stage and screen in the 70s. It's this year's Disaster Artist, but has an even better message and passion behind it. It's on Netflix, and absolutely worth checking out, even if you've never heard of Dolemite. And if you haven't, it's bound to make you curious.

This is what I wanted out of The Disaster Artist, it digs into the character more. This is less of a farce and more a celebration of comedians, musicians, thespians, writers, and uh, martial artists coming together to produce a cultural touchstone for Black America. Although for being a feel-good movie, it prefaces Rudy's success with a moral wrinkle that he essentially lifted his act from beggars and never *really* had to answer for that.

breezy fun. comparable to the Disaster Artist; whereas that film was a snide, cruel joke thumbing its nose as its subject and the audience, this movie is a genuine love letter to an eccentric, influential artist. if Moore has faults, we are not forced to endure them. we are instead encouraged to celebrate his triumphs. this approach can only make a movie so good, but "yeah, it was OK I guess" is Best Picture-worthy by Netflix standards. that said: give Wesley Snipes a damn Oscar nomination.

Ed Wood and Rudy Ray Moore were of a similar campy, conflicted fabric, so it makes sense that their biopics would be written by the same people. As in Ed Wood, the life of Rudy Ray Moore is not sugarcoated in the film. Both show the audience a clear, honest distinction between the person and the character. It's that blunt juxtaposition which makes the film so enthralling. Playing a discordant actor, which essentially requires playing two characters at once can't be easy, but Murphy does it well.

Finally a decent Murphy vehicle. He does a very good job at portraying Moore's crude charm and go-for-broke spirit, and while it's completely conventional in almost every respect, it hardly matters when the results are this entertaining. The solid supporting cast helps, and Snipes is surprisingly funny as the director of Dolemite, but it's Murphy's show, and he really embodies this colourful character. Hopefully this is just the beginning of an elaborate late career comeback.

This is a fun film with a good performance by Eddie Murphy. It helps if you have seen the original Dolemite films. The rest of the cast also do good work here. Overall I would recommend this film.

Moore's exuberance, creativity, and determination as a true and crude man of the people carried his career through any and all obstacles-and through Murphy's excellent portrayal it carries this film too, with its biggest obstacle being the script's failure to dwell on any of the obstacles in Moore's trajectory to the top. So the journey's a little too light and breezy, but like Moore's crew you just can't help but get caught up in the scandalous and silly fun of it all (see the sex scene shoot).

With few real obstacles for Dolemite, this entertaining biopic borders on nicecore, but it's an enjoyable watch and, while Snipes tries way too hard, it's an impressive comeback for Murphy.

Dolemite is my name, and fuckin' up motherfuckers is my game! That's the kind of biopics I like the most. Mostly funny and interesting because I've probably never heard of Rudy. Although I couldn't stand musical parts, they were annoying.

A funny fun biopic. The stakes never feel too high, cause most conflict gets solved instantly, but its just fun to see Eddie Murphy perfectly casted and back in his prime. The supporting casting is equally hilarious, especially Wesley Snipes, a huge surprise to me.

Super fun biopic in the vein of Ed Wood (yes I know it's the same writers). I laughed a lot and loved to see Murphy and Snipes in their purest forms. You do not need to have seen Dolemite to enjoy it but it will probably make you want to watch it after.

Having seem almost no movie in which Murphy has starred during the past twenty years, this viewer can believe that this variation on the "let's find a barn and put on a show" theme is in some way a "comeback", but the script is nevertheless quite lacklustre and clunky, the formula exceedingly familiar, the characterisation weak, and the laughs meagre at best. There is almost a sense that the film is designed to shame the viewer into feeling that they have no choice but to say they like it.

A very easy to watch movie with Murphy on top form in this biopic of the Blaxploitation legend. I get the impression that the reverential intent of the filmmakers to be historically accurate leaves the end product lacking in the drama needed to be truly great but this is still very entertaining. DIMN would actually make a great double bill with another of Murphy's movies, 'Bowfinger', which was coincidentally the last live action Murphy performance I enjoyed as much as this.

Fun love letter to Rudy Ray Moore and Blaxploitation films of the 70's. It's great to see Eddie Murphy and Wesley Snipes actually give a damn and acting in something like this again. It's a pity that there doesn't seem to be room for this kind of smaller film in the theaters anymore, so kudos to Netflix for providing the budget and platform for it. The screenwriters have specialized in this kind of biopics and while this is a solid addition, it doesn't reach the heights of their "Ed Wood".

A hell of a cast spearheaded by one of Murphy's best performances. Halfway through the film, there's a moment when Moore has a reaction to a weathered picture while rehearsing lines for the next day. This is, unfortunately, the one semblance of character growth we're treated to. The film is fun, but also devoid of much interesting conflict.

Hugely enjoyable and likeable. Though the first twenty-something minutes of his stand-up material makes you wonder how he become so popular in that field of work, you don't wonder the same when seeing the bonkers approach to bonkers movie-making -- it was a clever idea to amalgamate all the most ridiculous moments of all his '70s films into this behind-the-scenes of one film, just so we could include the behind-the-scenes of the most jaw-dropping sex scene.

Enjoyable evocation of the blaxploitation era is, like Alexander & Karaszewski's previous efforts, a showcase for some terrific performers, even if Murphy's overtly self-referential lead feels more like an impersonation than a performance; unfortunately this problem extends to the production as a whole, with the sets, costumes and specifics feeling somehow artificial. Still tops as entertainment, but compared to, say, ED WOOD, never really convinces of its time and place.

As biopics may go, it might not be spectacular, but it is very good and a lot of fun. Eddie knows how to turn it on, and Wesley Snipes's cameo role is just so delightful. The story is fascinating also and it's always interesting to see the behind the scenes filming of a movie within a movie.

As noted by joel-w-m, it's a little too breezy, so much so that it keeps it from being what I'd consider "great." But that doesn't mean it's not a hell of a good time with a wonderful, inspired performance by Murphy, who is clearly in his element here. It's pretty funny as well.

This isn't gonna win any awards, but damn if I didn't have a good time throughout all of it. Essentially it's The Disaster Artist set to Blaxploitation. The cast is stacked with black actors from Murphy, Burgess, Epps, Key, Robinson, and Snipes to cameo appearances from Snoop Dogg and Chris Rock. Probably a little too conventional, but thoroughly charming none the less.

Murphy is on fire here and it's wonderful to see him back at top form. He's ably supported by a cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key as the screenwriter, Wesley Snipes as director/co-star D'Urville Martin, Craig Robinson and Snoop Dogg. The film is written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who have written a few flicks about eccentric outsiders, most notably "Ed Wood". This film is an extremely filthy spiritual cousin to that masterpiece.

Eddie Murphy's still got it, as proven several times during the course of this funky biopic. On most fronts, "Dolemite Is My Name" delivers the goods, from the production value to the soundtrack - excluding Wesley Snipes's caricature of a performance and the fact that the movie seems a bit too lightweight for its own good, without the pathos and character depth that would make it compelling.

The first act is great, learning a bit about Moore, where he got his inspiration from and seeing him develop his stand up act. Then his career really starts to take off, and the drama stops: The obstacles he encounters are nothing more than minor hiccups, and everything runs so smoothly to the conclusion you start to lose interest. There's not even enough laughs provided by the Ed Wood-esque movie production. Murphy's in his element in this type of role, but it's pretty missable stuff.

Watched with, and at the behest of, a friend who found out I hadn't seen it. -shrug- Vulgar Eddie Murphy (or anyone, really) is not my favorite Eddie Murphy, so the first half or so was just eh. Most of the humor I enjoyed was later, during the filming of Dolemite. The sex scene was the funniest to me (or most memorable funny part, I'm not sure).
