Dominique Is Dead

Jeez, talk about a shop-worn premise (I mean, haven't we seen this 200-300 times before?...most famously in a film with a title that's very similar indeed). On the plus side, this is a very good-looking picture...with lots of pretty sets and sumptuous photography. Adding to the general larcenous atmosphere of the proceedings is the ongoing (musical) theme pinched from Psycho.

Man Walks Around In Dark: The Movie. Low-budget British horror with some ropey acting and a very predictable story. Its biggest problem is the oh... so... pedestrian... pacing. So much of the film consists Cliff Robertson just walking from room to room in complete silence, there is zero tension and very little interest.

So much silent walking without as much as tense sound cues or background music. So boring for me to watch. Tony showed even less emotion. What a terrible letdown at the end. Fav scene: first person chase scare

The cinematography by Ted Moore gives an illusion of class - this is the guy that made A Man For All Seasons actually visually interesting - but I suppose there is a difference between discussions of Papal authority and Jean Simmons lumbering around in the dark. You can church up a story this dull only so much.

I hadn't even heard of this before Vinegar Syndrome's Bluray. It's a thriller/gothic "ghost story" that borrows from Diabolique. It's a bit slow moving and has an English aura to it, but it's well made and better than it's reputation. The colors reminded me of Italian horror films by Mario Bava and there are a couple of effective scenes that provide chills. The resolution is a bit lacking as is often the case with these films. Definitely worth a watch for fans of haunted house / ghost films.
