Johnny Depp has had amazing skill at picking real life characters to portray. He excels here just as he did as Hunter S. Thompson, Ed Wood, George Jung, and James Barrie. I wasn't all that impressed with his Dillinger, and I think he probably was leaning towards farce when he depicted Willy Wonka. Edit: Turns out Willy Wonka isn't real.

Donnie Brasco is a well acted and mostly true gangster flick. It's cool, well written, and engaging for the most part. It sometimes feels just a bit longer than necessary, but the pacing seems to match the offbeat friendship that Depp and Pacino's characters' share. Really good!

Good gangster movie. Adrenaline from start to finish to a story of courage and friendship. Johnny Depp is very good and Al Pacino as well. What makes it even more interesting is knowing which was based on a real story. Forget about it.

Donnie Brasco is a really interesting look at the mafia and the police who work deep within its ranks as undercovers. Johnny Depp and Al Pacino are awesome and every scene seems to develop their characters just that extra bit further. This movie is perhaps one of the most underrated films I have ever seen. Both J.D and Pacino are award worth

This is very decent. I'm not sure how much dramatic license was taken, but the story itself was compelling and told in an involving manner. Pacino is great as a somewhat downtrodden mafia veteran, but Depp really works here; he has some believable magnetism, yet never feels like a hero, or entirely sympathetic. He's also much prettier than the real Joe Pistone (no offence). It feels like it loses a bit of momentum towards the end, but I've seen this a few times and it stands up well.

A genuinely different gangster movie. While alot of gangster movies are about doomed but semi-admirable "I did it my way" badasses who adhere to some code of honor as they steal & murder to avoid working, this is about middle management & how the mob - like any/most organizations - only pretends to value its employees. It also highlights the sense of unease undercover officers must feel after they've deeply embedded themselves into the life of someone they intend to betray.

There's nothing particularly great about this film, especially when compared to all the other amazing gangster movies out there. But I have a soft spot for it, due mainly to the performances. Pacino is great, and I think this is one of Depp's best, despite it being one of his non-quirky roles. I'm also a sucker for undercover cop movies with their intense "is he going to be found out?" scenes, and Donnie Brasco has some of the best.

This film has a great pedigree of stars, but overall this feels like a paint-by-numbers gangster flick. The film spends way too much time explaining the same mob movie cliches that we've all seen a million times. For a movie about going undercover in the mafia, there isn't as much suspense or intensity as I would expect.

Ace adaption of a good book, focused on the relationship of the washed up mob hitman and the young 'jewel guy'/undercover fed rather than the crimes off the mafia (although, we do see some kickings and shootings). Takes a bit of poetic licence, but a rather intelligent take on the tired gansta genre.

This is a good film to introduce you to the world of organized crime, as you follow Donnie Brasco into the dark underbelly, he is taught about the ways of the mafia, the quirks and rules that surround this world. The film is direct and straight to the point and plunges you straight into the middle of the action, with brief explanations of why each thing is happening.

In order to convince audiences that Johnny Depp really isn't a little furniture-throwing, reporter-abusing wuss, who has to date anorexic women so he looks like a man when he stands next to them, Newell has surrounded him with so many recognizable actors that "Donnie Brasco" looks like a gangster film retrospective.

You can keep Goodfellas, I'll take Donnie Brasco over it any day. This film tells the truth behind what it is like to be a "made" guy in the mob. Not that over stylized, romanticized and bloated film by Scorsese. Plus, you get to watch Johnny Depp before he started to take himself too seriously. He and Pacino are excellent in their respective roles.

The high-grade cast is wasted in this plodding and lifeless gangster melodrama. The film is mired in conventionality, suffers from very lacklustre direction and plotting, and has a third-rate musical score. The true tale on which it is based may have had the potential to be turned into an interesting or exciting movie, but, as it turned out, poor execution resulted in a film that is utterly reliant on its cast to maintain the interest of audiences.

Admittedly there are far better mob movies but that doesn't mean Donnie Brasco shouldn't be enjoyed, especially when you've got two such great leads. Johnny Depp proves his diversity with this film and though Pacino retreads ground here he still delivers a superb performance. Admittedly Michael Madsen is pretty wooden but really that's not unexpected.

A surprisingly emotional gangster flick. Pacino showing that he still has it. Or at least, had it. Depp is in top form here. It's refreshing to have a gangster movie that doesn't glamorize being a gangster. It's expertly depicted as tedious, unfulfilling and lonely work. Love the ending.

Remember the 90s, when Johnny Depp was a great actor? He and Pacino do some of their last great work here, elevating an average script into something worthwhile. It feels fairly derivative given the surplus of related films, but its success stems from not focusing on the mafia, but the relationships of the men involved. It doesn't belong on any lists, but I enjoyed it, and I think most people would.

Kind of fun to see as a period piece with lots of people in small parts. But when Paul Giamatti and Tim Blake Nelson induce Johnny Depp to lecture on the meanings of "fuhgeddaboutit", it feels like we've entered Mafia wonderland. Any use of Anne Heche is usually a mistake, but I felt bad for her in her horrible part. Pacino is surprisingly low key and tolerable.

The movie had me hooked from the first confrontation between Pacino and Depp, and it shines throughout when those two are together. But while the movie at first proceeds at high pace through many interesting situations, anything involving Depp's family is basic Hollywood fare, and the second half loses some of the pace. The ending I found disappointing too.

Pacino's role as a mere low rung of the mafia ladder is a nice subversion of what one might come to expect out of such a film, and might be one of its greatest strengths. Otherwise, it's fine -- inoffensively by-the-numbers, but far from being anything of a trailblazer in the 'mob' subgenre. Depp, Madsen, and Pacino are all very fine, very good.

It alludes more than reveals in many instances, and for the majority of time that works. It's subtle and we are not privy to all of our protagonists' thoughts or feelings but that serves to uphold the suspense. 2,5 hours breezes by.

I've slowly come to the realization that Adam Sandler has been doing a weird Pacino impression this whole time. Depp is good as the undercover cop juggling a double-life and Pacino as the gangster vet with a fatal soft spot. But I couldn't help being reminded this dynamic was already outdone by Reservoir Dogs, since this movie opens with a nod to Reservoir Dogs. True it may be, the story is too conventional to stand out amongst such a heightened - sometimes to the point of operatic - genre.

Pacino proves he's totally capable of creating different mob characters and it's very interesting to watch his chemistry with Depp, who is also great. The direction doesn't stand out much but the true story aspect makes the movie fascinating. Madsen is fun to watch, too.

A true classic. Depp just showing the talent that bloomed in later films, Pacino as brilliant as ever. With Pacino in an unusually understated role, Donnie Brasco tells the story of an FBI agent (Johnny Depp) who infiltrates the mob and becomes friends with a Mafia assassin played by Pacino. Based on a true story, the film illustrates a gung-ho agent who eventually gets far too deep into the mob structure and is horrified by what he sees. A decent Mafia film.
