lol leave it to Kiyoshi to create the oddest comedy imaginable. As the humor became more pronounced toward the end, it actually kind of grew on me.

For whatever reason, changelings and doppelgangers are my personal nightmare fuel. So, successfully turning those... things into an off-black comedy kinda resonated with me. It was the bee's knees. Sadly, I will need a rewatch to figure out if a party quart of beer was present. Look, I know it's a cultural thing, and that's probably just how people in Japan serve beer at meals, but in my mind, it's a director signature.

A vicious comedy executed with clinical efficiency and a shockingly brilliant screenplay. When you ask if it's a horror or a comedy, does that actually matter? Sometimes it's the same thing.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a great director who seems to often be left trying to get what he can out of mediocre to weak scripts. There are so many movies about doppelgangers and even a lot of really great ones, but Kurosawa's Doppelganger just feels like it has nothing original to say and nothing worthwhile to show/do. The clunky way the dual Koji Yakushos were executed on screen was also a distraction more often than not.
