Dr. Jekyll and His Women

It was sometime during the uninterrupted five minute sequence of Udo Kier splashing around naked in a bathtub that it dawned on me that sometimes film isn't necessarily all about plot structure.

A beautifully crafted nightmare, Borowczyk's greatest masterpiece as well as his darkest and most personal. He re-imagines Jekyll/Hyde (and later his demonic bride) as libertine heroes, murdering and raping authority figures and laying waste to the upper middle class all in pursuit of pleasure. The last few scenes where the couple go wild, destroying their possessions, fucking and biting at each other's flesh is haunting and hypnotic.

A bit of a curiosity this one. Probably a lot tamer than I expected, but quite stylish and with an eerie, unsettling quality. The script, acting, dubbing and plotting are all insane to various degrees. It's shame that Kier had to be dubbed, as we lose that great voice. Magee's character and performance are wonderfully OTT, and the cast are all quite entertaining. Hyde reminds me of Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory, but marginally creepier. So, a bit hit and miss, but genuinely interesting.

('not that hot' is incorredt - more 'enjoyment is in the viewers hands') Strange indeed... but watchable. Erratic semi-porno but with a plot of sorts so better than most.

On the plus side, the photography is lush, there is the occasional memorable scene, and eventually an unusual theme reveals itself: a man's phantasmagorical dream of completely abandoning all constraints on sexual and violent behaviour, and of discovering to his delight that his betrothed would love nothing more than to join him in this. Unfortunately, these virtues are insufficient to make up for the terrible dialogue, superficial characterisation and an atmosphere that screams glorified porno.

Such a crazy collection of exploitation stuff at display you just can't look away -- the level of on screen insanity, violence and depravity is nearly unbelievable. Men are shit.

Falando sério, essa versão deve ser a única que leva o conteúdo do id a sério, pura pulsão sem qualquer entravamento do superego, se alguém colocou o Mr. Hyde em sua essência pura foi esse filme.
