The most popular and noteworthy of the early silent film adaptations of the 19th century novella, "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde", made for a solid enough watch for an early American silent horror film. While John Barrymore does a rightfully noteworthy job embodying the two titular roles, I really wish we either got more of Jekyll internally struggling with the creation of Hyde, or more of Hyde being a real monster...like no where near enough children were randomly attacked for my taste.

Early horror film proves that "showing too much of the monster" has always been around as a flaw. Definitely barrymores performance is a very watchable sight and the makeup is intriguing. However we see little of jeyklls torment which is the real meat and philosophy of the tale, and until the end hyde doesn't do much more than bar crawl - such vile debasement!

Good production for 1920, and occasionally creepy. I'm glad the horror genre has progressed since then, though.

Barrymore gives a great performance as Jekyll and Hyde, relying not on lots of makeup for Hyde but, rather, on simple distortion of his own face.

John Barrymore acts well, but there really isn’t much substance here, just some Victorian views of morality and cool makeup. The novel is better

Barrymore was impressive Hyde, but otherwise this was somewhat tedious.

Strong adaptation of a simplistic but enthralling story. Looks great and moves swiftly.

Still lurid and candid without going too far into cartoon villainy. Production design is top notch and Barrymore gives a polarized performance.

While I like some aspects of the film like Barrymore's performance I found the movie really dull and it had a hard time keeping my attention.

A museum piece in some respects, this early horror is impossible to not compare to Dr.Caligari, which was released in the same year and was light years ahead in terms of style, theme and allegorical significance. The internal struggle of Jekyll is thinly drawn and the transformations are vaguely comical, but the prosthetics are good, Barrymore's facial contortions are genuinely creepy (at times), and the hallucination scene is rather unnerving.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brad Dourif based his performance of Wormtongue in LOTR - at least in some part - on Hyde here. Their expressions and mannerisms are uncannily similar. Unfortunately, Barrymore's convincingly creepy transformation is the only thing worth noting here; the Jekyll & Hyde tale has been told in much more entertaining ways.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a great silent film featuring a classic story. The effects used on the transformation are simple, yet suitable.

Well made, with generally good performances; though it can be a bit dull at times. The main thing to really stand out is Barrymore's take on Hyde and his transformations--the image he presents really holds up well. Besides that, it's also easy to see why Nita Naldi (debuting here) was one of the more in-demand specialists in vamp roles.

A lively star vehicle which renewed John Barrymore's popularity with film audiences. Some scenes still grip, and Barrymore accomplished some transformations in full view of the camera, by facial contortions.

First half better than the second (which drags a bit). Btw I swear Barrymore's Hyde was in the Kinks...

John Barrymore's Hyde was wonderfully creepy, and I especially liked the microcephalic "pinhead" appearance of the top of his skull when he removes his hat. It adds much to his character of a deformed wretch. Worth watching if you're into old films.

It has some interesting themes but doesn't do much with them. The introduction of M(onste)r Hyde had me wishing for a more functional shadow personality, as it is, this story is pretty basic.

Very awkwardly crafted, even for its time. The message is heavy-handed but important: if you give in to sin by, say, having premarital relations with a harlot, you'll soon inevitably be literally running over children and murdering your elders. I can appreciate his effort, but John Barrymore's performance is just a bit too goofy to be taken seriously.

The scene where he kicks the whore out reminded me of Jack Nicholson's Joker. Other than that, I didn't find much else in the movie. I had to watch it to satisfy my curiosity, of course.

The best and best known of about a dozen silent versions of the Stevenson classic. A production of great historical import, this is one of the oldest American-made horror films still readily available for viewing and was the first version to introduce the now standard subplot of two women to mirror the different aspects of the Jekyll/Hyde personality. Dated but worth seeing for Barrymore at the height of his thespic powers.

While the story almost comes to a complete stop between the first transformation and the second one we're shown (which I thought was the best), it's a decent adaptation of the short story. That hallucination scene creeped me out too. A good "horror for those who don't like horror" film.

A very well done version of Stevenson's famous book. John Barrymore plays the titular character(s) with such a sinister desperation. With the help of some fantastic prosthetics, he creates what I feel is one of the scariest figures in all of horror.

Meh. Narratively weak. The makeup/special effects were good.
