Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde

Man that title should’ve been saved for the blaxploitation film. Like all men who wake up in a woman’s body they go straight for honking their hooters in the mirror. A lurid entry into the great tome of PG boobs.

It's a premise that might raise an eyebrow, but at brief moments this Hammer Horror film shows how inspired and subversive it could have been with its transgender plotline. It's a shame thought that, while watchable, it is content with a standard narrative to such an idea rather than push itself to its potential.

In this one Hyde is a smokin' hot momma.

A fun 'Jekyll the ripper' mashup of horror tropes, camp without too much hammer 'humour'. Sadly it just never explores the sex swap stuff in a satisfying way, all seems a bit of a waste.

Better than I expected.

An interesting idea (hopefully this sprung from more than a pun) with some good performances (esp from the heavy-lidded Beswick who oozes sexuality) & a clever use of editing to convey the transformation. The biggest problem is how little Jekyll is bothered by, or even considers, what it means to regularly turn into a woman. The film would have more impact if Hyde's lustful side bothered Jekyll at all. The ending is also anticlimactic failing to pit the 2 into conflict in any satisfying way.

Another take on the familiar story, only this time Jekyll doesn't transforms into a brute but a woman. It has all the tropes and production design value which make a Hammer movie always fun to watch. But unfortunately it does too little with its premise by never really delving into the difference between masculinity and feminism. Making it end up too much like a one trick pony; seeing Ralph Bates turn into the gorgeous Martine Beswick.
