Dr. M

Chabrol does for Mabuse what he did for Fantomas in a way. Pulpy, often cheesy, verging on some kind of subtle surrealism, it was quite unconvincing for a while. But as oddly paced and awkward as it can be, it is aesthetically fascinating. I don't know why no one else seems to like it at all, but I could have bad taste in movies.

Chabrol tries to update the old Dr. Mabuse series but the results aren't very good. The main interest here comes in wondering how Bates, Beals, and McCarthy were persuaded to appear in this misfire.

I didn't think Chabrol was capable of making a bad movie, and then I saw this.
