Decent, no-frills, middle-of-the-road entry in the Bond series, notable only for being the first one. More of a procedural detective story than an action film.

It may be of a slower pace, but Bond's first outing feels like a real spy flick, relying not on gizmo sci-fi wizardry or even Bond's suave gentleman sophistication to tell the story or to save the day. And I'll take its attention to small details over parkour beat-em-ups any day.

Some parts haven't aged well: the 2nd hour has sluggish pacing; the car chases are primitive; despite also risking his life the black character's treated only as a servant; & there are very naïve ideas about radiation. Despite all that, this is far more enjoyable than FRWL. Bond gets a great intro & it's refreshing to watch Bond actually do a lot of sleuthing rather than just being in the right spot at the right time. The villain still keeps Bond alive for no reason but Andress is hot & fiery.

Although the effects, stunts, and gadgets aren't as impressive as they are in later features (though they are still pretty good), the film is more cohesive and less scattered than many of the other Bond films. The narrative is (comparatively) taut and suspenseful, the pacing is great, and the film proves to be very entertaining.

Seems to be one of the least formulaic Bond movies, with minimal car chases, but grabs the attention in more stealth action. The plot is ok, but slightly inaccessible, and Bond isn't as witty or competant as I would like.

It shouldn't bother me as much as it does but the tarantula bit is just so silly and it destroys some real tension. I was taking the Dr. very seriously right up until he demanded Bond be killed with this fragile, slow-moving, and altogether non-lethal arachnid, which is the assassination equivalent of the Knights of Ni demanding a tree be cut down with a herring. I guess I wasn't expecting it to be so campy right away with Connery trying so hard to restrain that sweet caramel accent of his.

James Bond Project 2017: Confession time, I've never really seen a James Bond movie. Well except for strangely "You Only Live Twice"(1967) randomly one day. However, the James Bond character has so heavily permeated pop culture over the years I felt familiar with all the gimmicks and "Bondisms" through osmosis. Although I was worried my exposure and fondness for a certain Mike Myers creation would hamper my appreciation for the series, I was pleasantly surprised by this rock solid introduction.

A pleasantly paced detective/spy drama. Bond's predictable womanizing is eye-rolling but fortunately his cool and collected investigative work in the missing-person mystery takes center stage ("One takes cyanide, another would've stood for her arm being broken, neither would talk. Who puts that sort of scare into people?"). Bond's climactic convo with Dr. No is no cinematic slouch but the control-center action sequence to follow feels a little silly and the stakes aren't made clear.

Though rough around the edges (notably in its action scenes), this film established so much of Bond tradition and iconography right out of the gate with enormous swagger that I can't not love it. From the glorious fully-formed theme song to Ken Adam's set design to Bond's gambling and womanizing and of course Sean Connery as Bond himself, it's all right here in movie one. Bond's casino introduction and cold-blooded execution of Professor Dent - classic. (Ytadel's series ranking: #14 of 24)

Not the greatest James Bond film out there but definitely a strong start. The high-tech stuff is quite dated now but if you're either willing to let that go or accept that it takes place far in the past then it won't be a problem at all. Sean Connery makes a fantastic James Bond, and in my opinion the best one out of everyone who has portrayed the character. Great spy movie.

The first of the Bonds and not one of my favorites, though it debuted many of the signature elements of the "Bond" style. Connery is great (and still the best Bond), but he didn't quite have the level of comfort in the role he did later, which makes sense given this was his first go-around. And while Joseph Wiseman gives a quietly-menacing performance as No, he appears much too late in the movie for there to be as dramatic a climax as there should've been.

Bond begins here, and it's still one of the best, if not the best. And the same goes for the original Bond girl, Ursula Andress. It's more of a mystery than an action film, and it has one of the best plots in the franchise.

(rewatch) Pacing is a bit slow and there's tons of exposition that sometimes leads nowhere but it's hard to really shit on this too much. Connery is perfectly cast as Bond and commands the screen and displays amused mastery better than anyone I've ever seen. When Urusla Andress finally pops up Connery's facial expressions mirrors what the audience is thinking to a tee..."goddamn." Has some classic one liners and a couple of decent action scenes but Bond has been better obviously.

Top badass moment? Finding out I am basically James Bond. He drives a Sunbeam Alpine; I used to have a Sunbeam Imp Sport. He drinks a lot of Smirnoff vodka; I’ve a bottle of Tesco organic vodka (that’s nearly 20 years old). He’s got a Scottish accent; I’ve got an English one. He’s got a licence to kill; I’ve got a 10 yards swimming certificate. He’s irresistible to women; …and I’m not. I think I’ve run him pretty close on the vodka anyway. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Dr. No is a solid start to the Bond franchise that successfully adapts many aspects from the novels into the identifiable pop culture icons they are today. While the influences of North by Northwest are evident, the aesthetic is somewhat more enduring, inspiring decades of parody to come. The action, especially the car chase, is woeful but the film is a fun romp. Connery's Bond is surprisingly charming, astute & a capable detective. The characters are diverse, but the casting hasn't aged well.

Not exactly known for their political correctness, Dr. No makes the rest of the Bond films look like 30 Rock. Popeyed black sidekick? Check. Dumb blonde damsel that keeps fucking up the program? Check. Yellow menace? Check. Bond sleeps or tries to sleep with every woman that crosses his path? Yes, except for the black one ('Freelance'), even though she's gorgeous. It is pretty stylish, visionary and usually interesting even though it's not exactly enlightened and gets sleepy here and there.

First of the phenomenally successful James Bond movies, mixing sex, violence, and campy humour against expensive sets and exotic locales. A classic that set the formula for all the Bond films that followed. It would score higher if not for a lot of casual racism. Honey Ryder as the ultimate Bond girl? No. There's a scene where she flat-out explains she's messed-up because of sexual abuse by her family when she was a kid. That doesn't make for a strong female lead. Connery is smokin' hot though.

Honestly, it was much better than I expected. Connery was awesome as the cocktail drinking, lady swooning, ass-kicking James Bond. It does get slightly ridiculous with the character named Honey Ryder and an enemy with metal hands, but I guess ridiculous female names and odd villains are a staple of the series and I better get used to it.

It may be a bit of empty entertainment, especially early on when the thrills are a bit obvious and unrelated to the plot, but it does a good job establishing the character of James Bond and providing a fun story. In relation to other Bond films, it feels more relaxed, but it may just be the Jamaican setting messing with my head. The fact that it's such a confident action film helps.

The first Bond film holds up surprisingly well fifty years on; leaner and simpler than many of its brethren, it still finds time for the series' expected trimmings: lavish sets, ambitious villains, beautiful women--and Bond's suavity, pulled off perfectly (of course) by Connery; Joseph Wiseman is an intriguing, otherworldly Dr. No, and Ursula Andress sets a high standard for the Bond girls to follow. Terence Young's strong direction, good use of sound, and Monty Norman's great score top it off.

Dr. No was a strong platform for the James Bond franchise to build on and it is still regarded by many as one of the best in the series. Sean Connery is perfectly cast as James Bond and he brings style, sophistication, humour, charm and brutality to the role. Ursula Andress is the first and arguably best Bond Girl & Joseph Wiseman is a classic Bond Villain. Dr. No masterfully balances serious and believable spy & espionage thrills with a completely outlandish sense of aventure and escapism.

It's interesting to look at this in the wake of so many sequels. You can see the seeds for all the Bond tropes, but some are very light and barely perceivable. It's much less of an action film than I expected, more of an investigative mystery with a few action moments. It's a very good one, though, gripping with a snaking plot but never convoluted. The ending feels a bit rushed, and the villains being overconfident pompous idiots is in full display, but it's fun and works well.

For a long while, Dr. No was available only on television or in cropped VHS prints that emphasized its low-budget, low-key tone, especially in comparison with the later Bonds. On DVD it's easier to see why this film was the smash success that launched a franchise. Conney's Bond is basic and brutal. . . it must have been shocking in 1962 to see the nominal hero pull the trigger on a couple of Bad Guys with impunity. More faithful to Ian Fleming than much of what followed, there's also less fun.
