I hope they make movies out of every good game in my rom collection that I have never beaten. I'm looking at you, Contra: Hard Corps. This is a pretty solid kid's adventure movie. Not at all pretentious and requires zero knowledge of the game it's based on. There's a little fan service, but nothing distracting. Pretty solid, even though the human characters are occasionally animated muppetly. (I've played approximately 1.5 of these games, so inaccuracy matters little)

A fairly mediocre adventure film that feels like a compilation film. Its fun enough and has a bit of a twist ending that was interesting even if it didn't raise my score any.

Could have been so much better. The movie means nothing to you unless you played the original game. If you did play the game, this will bring back so many memories - it was so nostalgic, I bought a SNES to play it again! - and for the most part, they get it pretty right, but the game is so vast and expansive, it was never going to fit into one movie. The animation is good and the story is fine but the-all-too-meta last act was a little too much and upended what was otherwise a great experience.

I haven't played the games, but this cinematic adaptation of Dragon Quest is muddled affair that while accessible fails to be engaging. Ultimately, the scope of the story is too large for the 100 min runtime, spanning generations & numerous quests that aren't developed. The animation is good, the dialogue cheesy but fun, but the voice acting and music (in the English dub) were subpar. The ending was actually my favourite part; produced with more coherence and depth than the rest of the film.

The first 95% or so of the film is a cheesy but pretty accurate, cheerfully doofy and eager-to-please-fans adaptation of Dragon Quest V. It then concludes with one of the worst twists and endings I’ve seen in any film in my life, a truly “how did they ever in a million years think this was what ANYONE wanted?!” catastrophe of ill-conception. If I was less a casual and more a hardcore Dragon Quest fan I’d have chucked my TV in the garbage.

Condensing one of the longer Dragon Quest Games into a 1hr 40 minute movie is no easy feat, especially when you tack on a, "unique" subplot" , and this movie sure falters for it. Story moves too fast to really settle on any side character and lots of the plot feels unnecessary in return. Surprisingly the dialog is decently written and most of the jokes land, the animation is also really beautiful and was able to barely keep my entertainment throughout the movie.

I've always wanted to play a Dragon Quest game. The urge didn't exactly lessen after watching this one. Goes a little all over the place, and changes things abruptly, but never so far that you can't catch-up with what's going on. And they do it in a fun way. I'm not going to claim it was anywhere near a complete experience.
