Not my genre so ignore rating. On the whole better than some (the lion dance scenes are excellent) and there's no question IMO that the actors are very athletic. Against that: it is very genre bound and typical of Chinese martial arts films of the time, as such it tends to wear down your enthusiasm rather than entertain as it plays on (and on). Really, in the end, for genre fans only.

Wicked stuff from the beginning. The whole eagle claw thing is maybe a little unconvincing, but pays off splendidly at the end, and is a fun device in place of a typical training montage.

Badass. Some movies form childhood are etched in memory to be special.

The first few sequences feel like this will be a mess -- there seems to be a dozen different storylines, and then action almost stops as we watch a lion dance for quite a while (*I* liked it but it feels out of place). Somehow, though, through some very good fight sequences (the demon tailor being notable), some moments bordering on horror, and a little overdone slapstick, all of the story starts to come together to a strong, if predictable, finish.

You have to put up with a lot of frankly embarrassing slapstick comedy and a completely illogical story, but it's worth it for the Lion Dancer fight early on, and the very intense final few fights, especially Foon's ingeniously horrifying fight at the theater, which is one of my favorite scenes in a kung fu movie.
