Dream/Killer

Sling Blade is a film that I often refer back to when describing a film where the crux of the story is something undeniably wrong and perhaps uncomfortable but instead manages to focus on good characters or actions that bring the film up to something more uplifting than a story with that crux should be capable of. Almost everyone outside of Dwight Yoakam in that film is good and kind to Karl. This manages to focus on the good in a terrible situation and for true crime docs, it's appreciated.

The United States "justice" system is a scary thing. Hearsay can now get you imprisoned for life. Why anyone would think that America is the best country on Earth is beyond me. No free health care, cops who will shoot first and ask questions later and lawyers who only care about winning cases, not whether or not the the person is innocent. Sounds like hell.

Very well told, including the tragic statement by Ryan at the end of the doc that drives home the authentic experiences of the participants involved.

It blows my mind how some parents divorce their children for being gay or for rejecting their brand of religion, while other parents, like Bill Ferguson, stand by their child in the worse circumstances and will spend years and years redeeming their child's reputation. Bill not only sacrificed his retirement to to work on regaining his son's freedom, he took on a second career in the service of the wrongly convicted. Very sobering.
