I wake up completely nude strapped to a bed with brass posts and a urine-stained matress. An old lamp with a flickering lightbulb stands in the corner, but otherwise the room is bare. An obese, janitor-like type comes into the room and introduces himself as Cletus. He strips, positions himself on my chest and proceeds to take a huge, hot dump on my belly, all the while singing Abba tunes. I would rather have that scenario play out than having to watch this movie ever again.

There is a lot of vocal talent on display but when you sacrifice plot for your talent to try and fill that void with music it doesn't create a complete film. It ruins the magic of the music and just makes it a visual album. That's not what I tune in for. The plot still has to be fresh and engaging for me to stay tuned. While this wasn't bad, it sacrificed acting talent for musical talent and that hurt.

A never ending montage of men and women in whigs singing really loud. Annoying, silly, glitsy and showy but most of all soulless. I am angry at myself for thinking this would be a fun movie in the first place. Goddamn musicals, never again!

Screamed songs, massive emoting, hokey emotional ploys, and herky-jerky editing more than overcame the otherwise well-done technical work on this film.

I was deathly sick as a child, my parents were playing this in the background, I had a stomach bug so this movie is just backgrounded by dry heaving. Watching as an adult, it feels exactly the same.

Honestly, Hudson's performance may be the most amateurish ever to win an Oscar. Yes, she can belt out a tune but her line readings are shockingly wooden, her expressions never ring true. Murphy and Knowles come off best in this patchy extravaganza - Beyoncé's 'Listen', not J-Hud's celebrated 'I Am Telling You' - is the showstopper.

It's strange this musical didn't touch the slightest of my soul like most of the other films of its genre, e.g. Sound of Music, Disney's animations, or even The Greatest Showman. It lacks something I can't figure out, not to mention it's way too long to finish. MY SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; Below 70=Forget it.

There's a mediocre story, some really iffy camera work (strange angles, excessive cross-cutting etc.), and there are loads of moments that probably worked well on stage but end up translating awkwardly onto film. However, all the people I know who love this film only love it because of the music, which is admittedly pretty good, as is the all-around acting and the pretty production design. So, watch it for that I guess, but don't expect greatness.

If you like music, especially R&B, Pop or Soul you are going to love the many high quality musical performances. Including exceptional performances from Jennifer Hudson, Beyoncé Knowles, and others. Even the musical performances from Eddie Murphy were unexpectedly good. The dramatic portions of the movie also tackles several gritty and troubling subjects. Overall it is an entertaining and engaging docudrama interrupted by excellent music on a regular basis.

For all its flaws, Dreamgirls is what this holiday season needs. It's a big, fat, luscious movie in which no one is tortured, murdered, or mutilated (honestly, how many recent films can you say that about?).

This movie was good. What lowered its ranking was the pace. The slower parts should have been faster and the fast parts slower. The music was pretty good with the downfalls being "Dreamgirls" and the fake Jackson Five. As far as the actors go, Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy were phenomenal. Beyonce wasn't that great until near the end, and the rest were good solid performances. It was nice to see a cameo by Jaleel White. Overall, not the best musical, but no where near the worst either.

Eddie Murphy actually stunned me, but the rest of the acting in this just left me cold. The Oscar ambitions of this are obvious when the credits roll and feels like an extended "For Your Consideration" presentation. The songwriting is lackadaisical, especially the supposed showstopper featuring Jennifer Hudson. An utterly unexceptional musical, with nothing really to recommend it beyond its genre.

Some great songs in this, but I think it would have worked better if they had stuck to singing in the studio and in performance rather that having the musical style singing arguements. Kind of spoiled the film doing that and dragged it out too much.
Also when Effie is doing her audition for the bar job and theres only a paino, make it a piano number don't add the invisible brass section...

Standard not-that-hot Oscar bait. It's not looking for dimension or spirit, it's looking for gold statues. Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy stand out amidst a bland and forgettable pairing of Jamie Foxx and Beyonce Knowles. And Murphy and Hudson are the only reason to see or really recommend the movie, and they are fun to watch tear up the scenery.

A musical that rarely feels like one, this movie "razzle dazzles" circles around movies like Rent of The Phantom of the Opera, but comes in just below Chicago in all around entertainment value, though this undoubtedly has more emotional pull. Hudson is absolutely amazing; her "And I Am Telling You" is the most moving, chilling moment in the entire film. Knowles is excellent as well, but the great surprise is Murphy's uncharacteristic touch of realism.
