Dreaming Lips

Dreaming Lips

1937
Drama
Dreaming Lips was lovingly assembled by filmmaker Paul Czinner as an "ideal" vehicle for his popular actress wife Elizabeth Bergner. The star plays Gabrielle, the glamorous, spoiled wife of world-famous orchestra leader Peter (Romney Brent). Left alone by her constantly touring husband, she inaugurates a romance with brilliant but reclusive violinist Miguel de Vaye (Raymond Massey). (allmovie.com)

Bergner, who could be fascinating in the right roles, here she just comes across eccentric and weird, with awkward execution of the dialogue to make things worse. Raymond Massey seemed just as awkward working with her coming across as a ham of a theatrical actor up-against her mumbling. Romney Brent comes across a lot better, and is a delight compared to the two, though he seems to be acting in a comedy while the other two in a tragedy, so even him comes across odd for this picture.
