If this is mumblecore (who cares?), it's the second-best I've seen behind Lynn Shelton's 'Humpday'. Similar to 'Your Sister's Sister', also by Shelton, Swanberg's latest is made in a filmmaking style that I really appreciate. In simple and observant movies like these, character is plot. The audience should be able to perceive exactly what the people onscreen are feeling and considering, so the actors need to communicate these emotions and thoughts, and the leads give very strong performances.

They sleep/drink/work together -- but do they have to have sex or kiss to feel they belong to each other? Drinking Buddies' main strength is to depict a friendship that, despite the inner sexual tension that takes place in every encounter, surpasses these boring concepts of fuck buddy or friendzone. Yes, you can fall in love with a friend by -- huh, being a good friend. That is: you might think Olivia is your dream girl -- she's hot, she drinks beer like a dude --, but Anna is the bigger prize.

I loved this movie. I was fearing a ridiculous wife swapping comedy, but instead I got this small sincere mumblecore story about friends, love, alcohol and the road less traveled. Real people with real problems. It's basically Sideways with beer... oh and I like beer.

Its biggest strength is feeling extremely authentic. We all know these characters and we can all relate to a lot of what happens. But, it's also the weakness of the film. It's so familiar and so authentic that it doesn't really feel like we're learning anything or seeing anything we don't already know. Also, if you weren't already in love with Olivia Wilde...

Let's see. Man leads woman on for several months, getting drunk till the wee hours of the morn, going for private hand-in-hand walks, having heartfelt chats at dawn by the lakeside, SNUGGLING IN HIS BED...you know, stuff buddies do. Woman (surprise!) thinks man may be into her, makes advance. Man is like, I LOVE MY GIRLFRIEND. Woman accepts this and everything is cool. Seems legit.

This was a nice surprise. It does a good job of capturing that "What if?" tension one might have between friends, and it does an equally good job of demonstrating that the imaginative day-dreams one might have about another person might not work out as well in real life as they do in dream-land.

What ultimately ends up being the destruction of a friendship, ends on a note that suggests the re-building of it (or more?). It's kind of a non-ending in that sense but that's fine. Not every movie needs a real resolution. Drinking Buddies creates a world with believable characters and relationships, and that in itself is an accomplishment. Well acted and well shot, this is a step forward for the director. This is the third Swanberg movie I've seen and the only one I like so far.

Good performances with no wasted exposition. It will likely be quite identifiable to a large set of people. It's so naturalistic, especially from Wilde and Johnson.

Felt real. I believed in these characters more so than in a lot of movies I watch. There is no one big scene or major plot dynamic. Keeps things just to our "drinking buddies" and rolls with it with great results.

Great acting helps tell a story where 4 characters traverse relationships both romantic and not. Even when a character does something that normal movies would make them a villain, this movie goes for realism instead and makes them empathetic.

This is my kind of film. Small scaled, with a simple theme that the great performances get to explore in depth. Jack Johnson pretty much plays his character from New Girl, so obviously he knows the role to perfection. And Olivia Wilde gives a surprisingly good performance and in addition to that she is absolutely stunning.

Nothing particularly innovative overall, but this film's dedication to hyperrealism is really what makes this a powerful dissection of 20-something relationships. The performances of the cast are also surprisingly topnotch, conveying a great deal of subtlelty in a script that's nearly devoid of the usual rom-com tropes and cliches.

Ok, that comes from a guy that works in a brewery. Really liked the scenes where they talk about brewing and flavors an stuff, since this is actually the life of a brewer. The movie is not that good by it's own, it's not bad but it lacks that extra something to make a change and be better that all the other romantic films out there.

Drinking Buddies is an aimless and meandering film that purports to be a realistic portrayal of adult relationships. Is it that? Sure, I guess, but it's also repetitive and doesn't actually have as much to say as it thinks it does. Sure, it might be "like real life," but lots of real life is boring and if you're not going to inject your film with richer characters or more meaning, there isn't much point.

Were they paying the script writers by the word? And unlike other movies where there is less talking, what is going on doesn't make up for it. Last but not least, shaky camera angles only really work in scary movies.

Overall I like this movie, but it definitely feels unfinished. The movie plays its hand early on, and then drives towards an inevitable conclusion, except it just sort of...stops short. Swanberg continues to have great indie sensibilities as a director. The brewery makes for an interesting backdrop. Ultimately Drinking Buddies hinges on how much you like Wilde and Johnson. Personally I thought had great chemistry together. So while it may be flawed I would say it still mostly works.

While I found the first half of this movie shallow and difficult to sit through, the latter half was worth the wait. The relationships develop, characters become more flushed out, and the delicate nature of relationships becomes the central theme of the film. I like how the ending is left a bit messy - there are no easy answers when it comes to matters of the heart.

It's was entertaining for a movie that was only 75% finished. The ending left a lot to be desired - there's no way that shit sits right with homie after finding out his girl played tonsil hockey with some other dude, like, that conflict alone is worthy of its own storyline. And why TF does Joe Swanberg get top billing? He played Angry Man in the Car? Not even a named character.

All of the improvisation couldn't make up for the fact that I simply didn't find it all that interesting. The cast does the best with what their offered (which was, from my understanding, absolutely nothing) but it doesn't amount to much. Visually bland and unimpressive, as well.

A simple but satisfying romantic drama from the talented Joe Swanberg, who adeptly captures the precise mood of a relationship triangle between three very decent actors. The plot and semi-improvised dialogues touch on the usual themes but without once being too corny or predictable. And the subtlety of the twist towards the end makes the characters seem all the more realistic. Nary a false note.

This is one of those flicks that may surprise you how much you will enjoy it. The story is centered around the super growing trend of craft beer. The story is really quite simple and realistic which is a good reason why it's enjoyable. There is enough humour splashed in to keep things light and interesting. The actors do a great job, especially Wilde, Kendrick and Johnson.

Some great performances in this quiet slice-of-life comedy. The whole film was improvised, which leads a lot of weight to the film to be inconsequential, which hurts it in the long run. A certain scene between Ron Livingston and Anna Kendrick in the woods is phenomenal, and Kendrick shines in her small role generally. You can definitely do a lot worse, but there's also a lot better in this genre.

They may work in a brewery and drink beer every five minutes, but this movie is not about alcohol. It's about human connection and how there is a thin line between friendship and relationship. It's grounded dialogue and subtle moments are what makes it work.

Drinking Buddies comes off as pedestrian though there are a few laughs and it is occasionally sweet. The film was unscripted and the dialogue improvised, resulting in decent, honest performances from the leads. Unfortunately the plot is middling, and I could never quite get into the film. Honestly, there's probably more fun to be had Drinking WITH Buddies, instead.

Being totally unfamiliar with Joe Swanberg, I didn't figure on a movie called Drinking Buddies with Ron Livingston and Jason Sudeikis to share more in common with something like All the Real Girls than a lewd comedy. It's understated without being boring, and the drama is solidly rooted in interpersonal conflict instead of external forces. It's also lean as hell, a zippy 90 minutes without feeling undercooked. Just one of those movies that does a damn fine job in every regard.

Not a spoiler but the last scene sums up the entire movie. The summary for this is also a bit miss leading. A very real (bar Ron Livingston's character who's there to throw in a spanner and nothing else) depiction of male/female relations. Jake Johnson's relationship with Olivia WIlde's character is the close male/female friendship with a dollop of tension that Harry Met Sally says isn't possible, he and Anna Kendrick make a great couple. Great indie.

Interesting for two reasons: 1) we see how an early mumblecore director polished, stylized, and matured his work and 2) we see how a "romantic comedy" can bend the genre and explore more nuanced relationships. Not particularly notable as a standalone film.

Marketed as a comedy, but this is actually more of a drama. Nothing really earth-shattering happens, but the characters are interesting enough, the film avoids most cliches and plays against conventions. Too broad in its characterization and kind of generic in how clean it looks (how ironic for Swanberg!) However, parts of this are perceptive, nice, and hit close to home right now. If nothing else, it perfectly captures the tensions involved in moving, which I think is sort of underrepresented in film. It's Swanberg's best, but not for the reasons you'd think.

Sexual tension and beer both make prominent appearances in what is a very enjoyable portrayal of friendship. The improv seems to add a very genuine feel to the 90 minutes of flirting.
