The friendship between Cody and Del hit me real hard. It was so personal, so well done. You can say the same thing about the entire movie. Every single issue that it touches, it does so with finesse and subtlety, never needing to go into dramatics to tell a compelling story. From the gentle piano that soundtracks it to the genuine performances; from the heartfelt dialogue to the unassuming (but perfectly apt) way in which it's directed, this is one of the best movies of the year.

25 years ago, I'd have dismissed this as too on-the-nose, shallow, and obvious. in 2020, though, it evoked fond, calm memories of slower & simpler times, old friendships, and long-departed relatives. comfort viewing.

One of those rare, simple gems which may not break any new ground, either stylistically or story-telling wise, but has so many profound and resonant things to say about the human condition (encompassing characters from childhood through to the end of life and beyond) that it gets past your defenses anyway. With a structure resembling GRAN TORINO, this is less overtly dramatic but just as poignant, with Dennehy's final performance amongst his best and Jaye and Chau his match.

A wonderful, intimate gem.

Driveways is a movie I underrated at first, accented by some solid dramatic hooks, unexpected laughs, and believable, measured performances - even though Hong Chau is a little stilted at times. Dennehy doesn't work very often anymore but he goes from good to fucking *great* by the end. Even with some loose ends left untied, Andrew Ahn's first film in four years is a really strong effort, with great music and moving character relationships. I'm looking forward to seeing more from him.

A remarkably naturalistic ode to kindness.

Despite the almost glacial pace, the story is rewarding. What unfolds is a heartwarming story of an unexpected bond of friendship between a shy unspoiled nine-year-old boy and a lonely, undemanding retiree. It's a sweet story but it ends on a somewhat sad note because of their impending separation. Overall it is warm, thoughtful, entertaining and entirely worthwhile.

I thought it seemed a bit slow and the plot direction wasn't very clear at first but towards the end it really hit me. Its quite poignant and I liked how the music is - not too loud and overbearing but just right to highlight the emotional scenes. The actor who plays the young son, Lucas Jaye, does a very good job, so I thought, as does Brian Dennehy, who plays the neighbour, Del. There is some surprisingly strong language present now and again, hence the rating (its rated 15 in the UK I believe

Can see the steps he’s making going away from the distant arthouse filmmaking of his amazing debut to the warm, electric and alive third feature (which was also great) Fire Island. Doesn’t really get mentioned but Ahn is definitely one of the most underrated directors in modern American filmmaking.

Beautiful little drama. Great (near the end of his life) performance by Brian Dennehy.

Calm movie with a truthful portrayal of emotions and characters. A delicate and touching retelling of curmudgeon befriends kid who's wise beyond his years... B+

The simultaneous coming-of-age for the child as well as the friendship that is born with the old man is just great to watch. Small to scale and makes use of every inch it takes. Did so much with so little.

A low-key but engrossingly bittersweet nicecore-adjacent drama with a cute performance by young Jaey and a fine swan song for Dennehy.

Yalnızlık. Annem filmi.

While the mother is cleaning her dead sister's house, the kid is hanging with the friendly old neighbor who has relatable old people's sorrows. That's the film, folks. It's gentle.

A bit too simple, slow, and understated, but this is a rewarding drama.
