Humourous and playful semi-travel documentary with some neat editing techniques and camera movements.

Just imagine if every travel doc were nearly as vivid. Varda goes crazy with Riviera's colors, beaches, buildings, hotels, common and rich people, the sunlight, the palm trees, the expensive private places, the crowded public places, the camping and the cemetery -- as the brilliantly written voiceover says, even the dead enjoy a good time there. The way she places such a straightforward but subtle critique on tourism is just unique. Also, what a showcase for the great photographer she was, huh?

Another tourism commission invigorated by Varda with an artfulness uncommon to advertising. It's an avant-garde stream of wit and energy. And colors! And music by Delerue! And class consciousness? God I love you, Agnes. What a nostalgic time capsule.

kind of an advertisement for the riviera region, but it's much more than that. it's also a rumination on nostalgia, and contains some really tongue-in-cheek, energetic filmmaking.

Beautiful shots all-round.

Agnès films like the front page of a classic holiday brochure but with charm, comedy and even several educational lessons of the French Riviera. But her early work shows she perfected her style by approaching film-making with an innocent curiosity of people and places. The entire style looks like it has this Kodak feel to it, the colours are striking and bold and the cinematography captures the landscape beauty.
