I've yet to see a Leone flick that has justified his title as one of the top directing talents, but I enjoyed this slightly more than 'Once Upon a Time...'. The chemistry and charisma of the two leads carries the film through its many plodding scenes (mostly around the third act) and pointless flashbacks. The shift to a darker, more dramatic, tone was unexpected, but that's also where my attention started to wane. Still a solid watch for western fans like myself.

One of Sergio Leone's last westerns, starring James Coburn as an Irish terrorist with a dynamite fetish and Rod Steiger as a greedy Mexican bandit who both get mixed up in the Mexican revolution. Plenty of enjoyable western violence, humor and a handful of terrifying large explosions...but it's too long at nearly 3 hours, padded with lengthy (and pointless) flashbacks to Coburn's past in Ireland. Still worth seeing.

It seems Leone spent too much money on this. Okay, the movie has a wonderful opening like other Leone films but i think the rest is not successful with the weak politic plot.

Duck You Sucker isn't without flaws - it could probably stand to lose 20 minutes without too much trouble, the political aspects of the film are a little forced at times, and the flashbacks are completely pointless - but mostly, it never forgets that it's a movie about people getting shot and shit blowing up, and nobody is better at directing movies about people getting shot and shit blowing up than Sergio Leone. What Coburn/Steiger lack in star power, they make up for in charisma.

The first hour was very good but then it was somewhat boring. OK but not so brilliant for me. Maybe with other actors like C.Eastwood or H.Fonda it could be a great movie. The music nevertheless was fantastic beautiful of Morricone !!!

Out of all the fun and landmark Leone my excitement shrinked in the melodramatic last half an hour. And either I missed the whole plot or the last memory scene featuring Coburn, his old comrade and a beatiful young lady on trio action was one of the most ridicilious things I've seen.

At once Leone's most vulgar and quirky movie. That combination makes it feel a bit awkward at times, but it's mostly entertaining throughout, with some really great scenes. It's also probably got more depth than other Leone westerns, as the two main characters are given a few emotional layers and inspiration other than cash. Lots of awesome explosions, too.

Unlike other Leone westerns, the characters here don't emerge triumphant from the social conflicts they are embroiled in.They are merely players on the grand stage, caught up in a revolution that they view with great cynicism. Leone's 'message' appears to be that revolutions exploit the poor and are futile power games that are doomed to fail due to deep rooted flaws in human nature. Stieger is memorable as a salt-of-the-earth bandit, and he has strong chemistry with Coburn.

Long epic that ties two unlikely heroes into historical moments. For the first half an hour I was so confused because I thought it was a classic western but then a motorcycle showed up, then a car too. Pretty powerful war depictions balanced against the friendship of these two guys, plus good comedy whenever Steiger unintentionally becomes a revolutionary hero. Fav scene: slow buildup of an intro when Juan has to sit and listen to racist comments.

After the one-two punch of UGLY and WEST, this is inevitably a step-down for Leone, but still a compelling experience for the most part - lacks the true operatic sweep that his best offers, but features moments that compare favourably to the best moments of his DOLLARS trilogy - the opening extreme closeups in the stagecoach are hilariously discomforting and grotesque. Steiger and Coburn acquit themselves nicely, though reminders of the superior Wallach/Eastwood dynamic shadow them all the way.

This movie is way way too long and unfocused. Also there aren't really any compelling characters. The first time I check the time as at 90 minutes then again at 110 minutes the film just seemed to get slower and slower. Don't get me wrong I still enjoyed this but I don't think I'll be watching this again any time soon.

This is a 2,5 hour movie that feels like a 4 hour movie. It starts out ok with Leone's tooth-fetish in the coach scene, but the movie quickly falls into a pattern of constant repetition and shooting. It's interspersed with bizarre slow-mo soft-focus scenes of John frolicking back in Ireland. There are several times when you think the movie has ended but then it keeps going with even more gunfire and that dreadful "shom shom" song. After 2 hours i just wanted it to be over. Guess what. Shom shom.

Not quite up there with Leone's big four westerns (the Dollars trilogy and OUATITW), but after a hesitant start with some misaimed humour settles into a very grim and effective, if overlong, drama.

Not particularly Leone's best film, but still entertaining in what it has to offer. At times, it drags a bit but there's that great feel of tension, intrigue and atmosphere that Leone does so well in this film... until the film drags itself down later on, that is. Still a decent watch overall, though.

In between all the greatness in Sergio Leone's earlier films, he also showed glimpses of what a clumsy, vulgar or even childish director he can be. In Duck, You Sucker that side of him has clearly taken over. This is an incoherent mess which halfheartedly attempts to be both a light comedy western and a political war epic. It all results in a tedious film with very few memorable elements.

Duck, You Sucker is inventive, playful, crude and full of big explosions. It's also full of bullsh*t like people firing MG42 machine guns (in ~1920!) from the hip, mowing down legions of bad guys (Rambo, anyone?). Contrary to some of the reviewers here I didn't think the flashbacks were ALL bad, in fact I thought the barroom flashbacks were quite tense and well-acted. I do agree, however, that the second half is too long and that the plot could have been tighter. Not Leone's best effort.

Overblown action spectacular, far too long to be sustained by its flashes of humour and excitement. A good instance of what happens to a small talent when success goes to its head.

I like that Leone takes a cynical view towards revolution, but in the end the political angle slows things down too much. Steiger is excellent, but his character isn't very compelling. Coburn's is even less so. And while Morricone's score had some wonderfully bizarre stuff in it, one recurring theme sounded like a Burt Bacharach piece and was woefully out of place. I didn't totally hate the movie -- it started out great, but got derailed somewhere along the way and never quite picked up aga

This is one of Leone's lesser known works, but I'm a bit confused as to why, as it's just as good as some of his best. The Morricone score is great and a bit unusual for him, Coburn is awesome and Steiger (if you can get past a New Yorker playing a Mexican) is even better, giving a performance with a bit of everything, from super fun scenery chewing to subtlety and everything in between. An absolute blast that flies by.

Deigns to Leone's surrounding masterpieces, but is likely not fully understood. Sergio had such a heart for the people, while Ennio blended and moved through the film with such emotional wave - like it spoke for all the loss and sadness that these hardened men couldn't express or overcome. The sadness would be overpowering if not for Steiger and the usual comic Leonisms that sort of string it high enough to casually enjoy. Coburn is one of the more complex leads I've seen in a Leone film.

The way it flows, like a fading out on the western and a fading in on Leone’s swansong is fascinating. In a fantasy world where I have infinite time I would marathon Leone’s work like an massive, violent yet serene symphony

Strange mesh of lead characters, who endure one of the least verbalised bonding arcs I've seen. It's almost like they've spent enough time on screen together that it's assumed that some kind of sympathy for each other exists. As for the beginning, I thought Leone had watched something like El Topo & thought he'd take a left turn into surreal/ experimental genres. The film straightens out shortly after, almost like a new director took the reigns & a tale of stammered or lacking exposition ensues

Pretty much The Last Boy Scout of its time, with intense close-ups and the weirdest score by Morricone. "Duck, you Sucker" is by far the best thing ever said in a Leone film -- as well as the balance between a crazy-ass comedy and a grim political satire set in the time of Pancho Villa/Mexican revolution. The sequences showing Miranda seeing his sons dead on the floor and the entire Mesa Verde rescue, intending to discover gold instead of freeing prisoners, show just how underrated this film is.

This could have been an excellent film but is dragged down by problems that should have been avoided. The film seems to subvert its own message. In terms of actual history, it is a chronological mess. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it more than the other two 'Once Upon a Time's' for its quirky approach to the topic.

My favorite character arc: from lowdown hoodlum to serious man of purpose. Very moving at times, very silly at others. Leone's other movies are obviously very cool, but this is his most convincing attempt at conveying real emotion, aided in great part by the two lead actors.

The whole plot feels like a detour before the real plot finally kicks off and then suddenly this long movies is already over.. The movie does not completely succeed in making the shift from the more lighthearted fun first half to the heavier pessimistic cynical second half. Morricone's scores, which is catchy as always, also is tonally out of place at the more serious parts. At its core this is of course a pure bromance. (2nd viewing, 1st:85)

A bit under Leone's average, but still entertaining and including some good sequences and ideas. While I watched it I thought the score music was awful and maybe this time Leone didn't have Morricone on it... but I was wrong, and I can't believe he did this music. There're some quite bad moments, specially those awful flashbacks. There's also more dialogue based scenes and less cinematographic storytelling ones. Good, but far from flawless.

One of Leone's least accessible films 0 with its intentionally muddled take on politics, and it's very morally dubious anti-heroes (one an IRA bomber) - but I absolutely adore it still after a few years of not seeing it. It was a response by the director against political westerns being made at the time, and while it could be seen as very conservative in tone by the end, it is a far more interesting work combining humour, pathos and all the best aspects of his film trademarks.

Leone's staples are all here (great photography & score, awesomely bad lead role, etc.) but Duck, You Sucker is perplexing in a good kind of way. It somehow manages to be Leone's goofiest film, as the action is often hilariously over the top and the plot's premise is somehow more outlandish than his other films, yet some elements lend this to be Leone's most "serious" Western. As our protagonists ride through a bloody revolution, there's a sense that their world is far removed from reality.

Duck, You Sucker is interesting for Leone because it tells the stories of characters caught up in the sweeping events engulfing them rather than the impervious, monumental characters of his other works. As with most Leone movies, Duck, You Sucker is able to get around some potential stumbling blocks with its gorgeous cinematography, methodical pacing, and, of course, another fantastic Ennio Morricone score.

Good leading performances, good Sergio Leone flick. He's always got a thought with his stories, but someting here was not quite right. Maybe if he did consentrate story more, because there was themes that did not meet each other propely. Sergio Leone's score was the first sampling I got of this film, and upon hearing it, for some strange reason, I had to see the rest. Great performances by James Coburn and Rod Steiger give A Fistful of Dynamite, also known as Duck You Sucker, an edge over many of the spaghetti western genre, and the interesting back story for Coburn's character adds depth to the film.
