Duet for One

Andrews' subtle, wrenchingly honest and emotionally devastating performance lifts otherwise frustratingly patchy drama, which makes an ungainly leap from a stage two-hander to an 'opened-up' film, most tellingly in some of the maddeningly abstract characterisations of the supporting characters; Bates in particular suffers with the bland, non-descript husband, though Neeson is terrific as Andrews' younger lover. Von Sydow provides solid support, but it is Andrews' show all the way.
