Dumplin'

Seduced into this Dolly Parton soaked world. The people in this Texas town took all the hate they had for black people and focused it like a laser beam on fat chicks.

There's not too much in the way of conflict or story to drive things forward. And while most of the characters were fine, they weren't so interesting that you wanted to spend time with them absent a compelling story.

It's slow and predictable and doesn't have anything compelling to hold me in place. I imagine the payoff might pay dividends, but to get there one must slog through uninteresting characters and a disturbing amount of Dolly Parton (did she sign on to write new material only if her praise constituted X amount of the runtime?). (DNF)

Good natured comedy/drama is well intentioned, but fatally lacking in substance. With echoes of HAIRSPRAY without the subversive bite, there are a lot of interesting ideas here: escaping into fantasy, body image/shaming, grief etc.; it's just a shame that the film continually sets up these intriguing conflicts without ever following through on them. A game cast does its best; Aniston as an ageing beauty queen is the highlight, though Macdonald is a fine heroine.

There's not a lot of tension or even momentum to be found in the plot (the revolution meets surprisingly few external obstacles, and conflicts with mom or friend appear and disappear) but that's because at its core it's simply a story about Willowdean (Macdonald is great) and her touching journey through grief and self-acceptance, and gosh, it has so many beautiful moments (the underdogs performing at the pageant was wonderful of course, but I'm pretty sure heaven will be like that Dolly show).

Cute but cliche.

All I did with this movie was give myself body dysmorphia. Love Dolly music though.

The acting, directing, and writing were all pretty solid. Would definitely recommend!

Jennifer Aniston is not great, and there were some missed opportunities to develop the main character's backstory and motivations more concretely (rather than just through some generic slowmo collages). But it was overall a very well made, engaging, feel good movie, especially for a father of girls.

Un petit régal. La mise en scène est typique dream indie, l'actrice principale sait être piquante et drôle à la fois. A part la rebelle de comptoir qui fait sa prolo lesbio anti-patriarcat, tout va bien, Jennifer Aniston est également une valeur sûre ici. J'ai passé un très bon moment.

Solito filmetto prevedibile e pieno di buoni sentimenti dove la ragazza grassa sfida le convenzioni e acquista fiducia in se stessa; nulla di nuovo, ma è recitato bene ed ho apprezzato il tocco country.

not believable but entertaining enough

1 anne kız hikayesi. Teyzesiyle büyüyen şişko kızımız, annesinin güzellik yarışmasını protesto etmeye çalışır. Güzellik ile çirkinlik arasındaki dengeyi anlatmışlar. Upuzun süresine karşın ilgiyle izleniyor. Ama 1 kısır döngü de yok denilemez. Filmin sonunda, 30 dakikalık 1 güzellik yarışması izliyoruz. İçinin güzelliği dışına taşsın.

Danielle Macdonald is great in the lead role in this film. The supporting cast also does a good job here. The script is good, the characters are believable and the story does not get stretched to far. Overall I would recommend this film.
