Dumplings

Not really scary so much as unsettling or, at times, grotesque. But I felt engaged for the duration, which speaks loudly for something that was originally just a segment of an anthology.

This film is even MORE lame than it should seem to be. Let's start with the plot: it puzzles me somewhat that the DVD-cover said "horror" and two hours later I've seen a film without a single scare but full of cooking advice. Seriously, the sound is TERRIBLE as well, cheap-ass surprises when a chicken pops out of an egg or a deer is sprayed on with water. Sounds lame? It is.

Props to Ch. Doyle cinematography is outstanding. Very beautiful, high contrast color palette. Soundtrack stands out on its own too. But the story telling is unemotional and dull.

I don't know what i was expecting when i found this film but it was definitely not whatever i just saw, lol. It was very good. And fucked up.

Grotesque story where all characters are driven by desire. If you watch this, I would strongly recommend watching the shorter version, which comes as part one of "3 extremes". The shorter version is a lot more suspenseful and does away with unnecessary details (unless you like to have everything spelled out for you). That said, a few more details in this version showed that Mr Li and Mrs Li (Qing) were as amoral as each other. Plus the endings (appropriate to each version) are quite different.

Relatively boring, it feels more like a dragged out short film based on a gimmick. Saved by nice colourful cinematography of Hong Kong outskirts.

The short that this is a remake of is pretty much better in every way.

Very engaging, very creepy. Some throwbacks to Macbeth. A story about a woman who lives in the past and the "extremes" she goes to to relive her lost youth... with a dash of twisted asian horror
