Mostly OK, but it looks downright brilliant next to the awful fantasy movies and shows we've gotten of late. It goes for a crowd-pleasing, Marvel-like tone, complete with constant quips, a formulaic story, and likeable characters whose arcs won't surprise anyone who's ever seen a movie before. Good practical effects - much appreciated in this day and age. I'd welcome more stories from the D&D world, preferably with a deeper, more LOTR-like approach - but that's probably too much to ask.

A strong start for Forgotten Realms onscreen. Neither austere fantasy ala Lord of the Rings or dark fantasy ala Game of Thrones, this is more in the action comedy milieu. But compared to the cringey sitcom attempts of Disney’s Willow series this works better because, well, most of the comedy is actually pretty funny. If Forgotten Realms goes on to be a franchise there’s lots they could make up or adapt - Drizzt, Cleric Quintet, Elminster, Baldur’s Gate etc. Fewer superheroes more fantasy I say.

There simply needs to be more fantasy adventure films. These films, generally, are awesome. Even when it’s just the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie in Renn Faire cosplay. This series shows a lot of promise otherwise, especially when this one rolls a… 15 for initiative, a… hey! 18 for practical effects and… perfect 20 for a cameo that makes it a mature arthouse chamber drama for 3 minutes. But anything goes, because it’s a fantasy adventure film, and even the weird ones are welcome.

The movie is a tremendously fun, action-adventure comedy that pays respect to its source material while never taking itself too seriously. The charismatic cast, playful screenplay, and visually exciting direction make for an old-fashioned fantasy adventure with modern sensibilities. While the plot is predictable and the film bloats to a needless length, these are minor issues in the full scope of the film. Fans of D&D and newcomers alike will enjoy this film.

The Avengers in a D&D setting. Hollywood is all so very boring these days. The same plots, the same jokes, the same contrived grown-up children as characters, inclusivity and the regular feminist/socialist/environmentalist type, the black man, the omnipotent female lead, the useless heterosexual man who is there just for laughs, and so on. The D&D jokes are almost fun, but not quite there. When will the madness of template-built films end? When will idiocracy run its course?

Problem: if you're an action+comedy+fantasy+adventure movie; you need to be "ok" across all 4, and "great" in at least one of those to really hit home. D&D-HAT has the "ok" part down, but with the exception of a fat dragon and a couple of interesting upside-down action sequences, nothing stood out. Not as funny as it thinks it is. Really average. Probably hurt for me because I recently rewatched LOTR and this isn't anywhere near that at all.

Really liked the first 20 minutes or so. The rest is not half as charming as it think it is. Mainly due to a rather lousy cast and a storyline that seems afraid of slowing remotely down at any point. Poor Chancellor Jarnathan is by far the best character.

Around the point where the obvious can't-get-my-players-killed NPC leads them in a fight against a chubby dragon, my inner 13-year-old starts giggling with delight. This consistently plays like a fun, not too challenging, D&D campaign. The actors seem to be having just enough fun with it, I don't mind if Grant keeps playing Paddington villains for a while. Wouldn't have hurt to trim it by 20-30 minutes, and a little too predictable in its character relationships, but never not entertaining.

As other reviewers have pointed out, its a very "Marvelized" fantasy production. There are some references thrown in to D&D and Forgotten Realms world in general, but without it being meta, I don't see why this matters that its Dungeons and Dragons. They will have to do a little more world building if they really want it to feel like a real place. That being said, its got enough laughs well thought out action and effects (although they are a little weak at times) to be a lot of fun.

For its niche, it's nearly perfect. The dialogues are not cringe-y, and are even funny at times, which is not a small feat. A lot of effects within a fun and vibrant world. I only wish we'd gotten backstory into the world and the magical creatures in it.

As someone who couldn’t care less about the source material or most fantasy adventures themselves, this was just so much fun. Dungeons & Dragons is just a beautiful time, full of clever, fun, and intricate writing, as well as a strong emotional pull. Everyone here was phenomenal thanks to this competent people behind the camera and that’s what I take most from here, because for the first time in a long time, I feel like I walked into something I didn’t know anything about, and I didn’t have to.

Pretty much everything it promised and a bit more! I went in for good vibes, and good vibes there were indeed! But it does have genuine heart, and most of the characters were actually well written. It’s a plot you’ve liked seen time and time again, but it’s effectively pulled off by people who are passionate about D&D and don’t outstay their welcome with too many jokes or overbearing world-building. It gets a bit exposition-y at times, but overall, pretty well made, paced and acted. I loved it.

Full disclosure: Chris Pine is my favorite of the Hollywood Chrises. I'm also usually turned off by the Phantom Menace C-Span route of Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones: where you get nerdy detail on the politics of fantastical lands. So I dug this movie, which rides on his charisma and doesn't go overboard on describing races, magic, and places. And outside of the songs, it avoids silliness. It picks up steam as it goes along--especially with the finale's action and fights. Recommended.

The sort of thing that makes me think how much the technological aspect of film production has advanced during my lifetime, and meanwhile how hackneyed scriptwriting has gotten. The adherence to the standard D&D setting and tropes really helps to illustrate how much of an inconsistent, incoherent mess that game can get in terms of world-building. Many high fantasy films are humorous and family-oriented, which is nice, but here the jokes feel like overcompensation.

Standard issue, overly familiar fantasy saga owes a (too large) debt to the MCU, with its quippy dialogue and studiously, conventionally eccentric characterisations; while the set and costume designs are attractive and well-wrought, it is also plagued by some hideous CGI effects which rob many key scenes of their impact. A bit of a slog, alleviated somewhat whenever Grant shambles onto centre stage; as is often the case in recent years, he’s having a ball and is the unquestionable highlight.

With one foot in reverence and the other in self-reverent absurdity, this flick tries to do for high fantasy what Guardians of the Galaxy did for the space opera. It doesn't quite succeed - at least not at the level of GotG - but it has a lot of fun trying. Admittedly closer to a Disney cartoon than to Game of Thrones but that's fine by me - I'm kind of tired of every brand new thing trying to out-sadist (?) what came before it.

Well, folks, they've finally made a D&D movie that's watchable in the conventional sense. Now if we can manage to excise the remnants of the Whedonesque quipping and loosen a bit the dispiritingly predictable three-act structure (is there a single viewer who didn't see where that tablet bit was going?), we might find our way back to some half-decent American adventure cinema.

Watchable, but forgettable & certainly a product of its time w/ lots of MCU-style jokes & the studio exploiting (or "appropriating") an IP overwhelmingly made popular by white males & then proceeding to fulfill DEI checkboxes & primarily pander to women for DEI reasons. As promised by the filmmakers, the males - except for a black guy - are often "emasculated" (their word, not mine) because they feel it's "fresh" (!!?!) to do so in 2023. They do deliver lots of easter eggs for bigger fans

They understood the assignment, it’s fun. Daley and Goldstein have a pretty good track record going with this and Game Night under their belt. The humor is genuinely better than the average comedy, and combined with decent characters, action, a fun fantasy coat, and some surprisingly creative scenes, ends up being a good time. The story is the only notable weak point, but it’s fine in that it just serves as a vehicle for the aforementioned strengths.

a safe, bland, uninspired work that exposes all of the shortcomings of design by committee filmmaking. personally, i found its attempts at earnest sentimentality interspersed with marvel one-liners insulting. better works have shown that it is not a fool's errand to expect a measure of believability from fantasy world depictions. would that its plot were just contrived fly-by-seat-of-pants shenanigans, but it also forgoes logic in favour of dumb luck as its driving force. alas, no saving grace.

Better usage of the source material than one might think. Some D&D references are made (one that was really ... meta), but the story doesn't depend on that. Instead, only one magical item is very important and gets milked that for all it's worth. I liked the villain's evil plan and how it's revealed. However, it's not until the last act that the adventure gets adventurous. The first two acts aren't bad but it's the ending bringing it all together that makes it worth watching.

The engaging ragtag team formula is executed with nary a hitch here; everyone is charming, from the pine-worthy leading man, appreciably humbled ("What is it, exactly, that you bring to this?") to the badass leading woman, given a touching dramatic arc ("Don't tell me you wasted it on me"), who together form a unique family bond, solidified with the surprising emotional nuance of Edgin's final realization. Dungeons & Dragons doesn't break any new ground, being slightly reminiscent of Guardians of Galaxy; but it's reasonably well-written, has a good cast, and is a good balance between fun, action & quippery. The action is decent, augmented by not-too-obnoxious CGI, even if there are no surprises with how the plot plays out. Neverwinter Nights was my childhood, so a few nostalgia points there. The was entertained throughout the breezy-paced runtime, though never really excited. Would watch a sequel.

Just a solid, solid fantasy film. The ensemble is fantastic, the humor is perfectly between in-joke references for die-hard fans and broad, effective character comedy, and the whole thing feels light and airy in a very solid way. This worked great for me! I liked that they used a bit of marvel sauce but not so much that it felt like it was embarassed by itself. Lots of playful ideas and a couple very fun action sequences and a pretty dang traditional but spooky villian. Got a good few laughs out of me as well but there are many clunkers too. I'm a fan of Forgotten Realms and god there's so much shit this movie gets wrong about the lore. Sending stones are used wrong. That's NOT how talk to the dead works! Disregarding that, it's also not doing anything narratively interesting with its setting and a lot of stuff is just throw away references. Captures the zany antics, absurd plans, and handwavy plots of tabletop role playing, but it doesn't capture that RPGs can also be full of dramatic immersion and tense situations where you truly don't know if the heroes will succeed. The film shows a blatant disregard for spatial, temporal, or logical coherence, but so does "Airplane!". As long as it's funny enough, an all-out comedy can get away with it. This is funny and energetic enough to do so. Good casting.

Better than expected, though the bar was quite low. Far fewer cringey quips than a blockbuster from a post-Marvel Hollywood tends to be capable of. The direction comes across as rather sloppy most of the time, but that changes whenever an action scene kicks off where it could not be any more obvious that the two second-unit directors completely took over, and good on them, they did a much better job than the two actual directors

Perhaps I had too high expectations because of a fun trailer, but this was a disappointment for me. If it had leaned more into the energy of Page's Paladin, I would have had so much more fun with it. For a comedy, all the main cast had too much "straight man" energy. I’d happily watch more of these characters, particularly if a bit more world building could be introduced. However, D&D is a text book example of Hollywood currently smashing out films with colossal budgets for predictably minimal return, so a sequel would hang in the balance. It works nicely in the sense of building a band of friends hanging out to solve some quests in order to tackle the main one -- retrieve a table capable of reliving someone and getting back Ed's daughter -- as we go along knowing stuff about them and their backstories. It's just a slight and funny adventure and I hope they make a bunch more.

The two end witch battle shots directly lifted from Avengers were odd, with the circling camera and hulk/owl bear beating the villain.

A little predictable here and there, but generally, I do like that when I have an idea of what will or won't work, it's addressed. It honors the lore instead of what past D&D movies have done. I was quite satisfied. Great acting throughout.

The next time someone tries to speak with you about the wisdom of crowds you should show them this movie's Rotten Tomatoes score and then make them watch it.

Enjoyable popcorn entertainment. On a sidenote, it made me want to rewatch "The Gamers".

As a life long D&D player, it was OK. As an adventure film, it was OK. As a comedy, it was OK. It was an OK movie, with some laughs and decent actioni not much else.

It's the marvel formula applied to D&D, except it's somehow not a total waste of time. I wouldn't mind seeing an interesting story in this realm now.

A pleasant surprise. The movie felt more of a comedy with cool special effects than a fantasy/adventure movie. Hit the play button thinking it would be an average flick, however found myself laughing through the film. Can't give it an amazing rating, only because it lacked the emotion you could tell the writers were trying to bring to the table at certain times.

A terrible story, bad character development, none decent sets and complete waste of time. But it was a fill up story for me before a good story I went to watch.
