Points for the early slow-motion fight. Would like to have seen more of Wilkinson versus Giamatti (and less Owen and Roberts). Felt like there was a better movie buried under the actual movie.

I watched this yesterday and already forgot most of it - bad sign. Michael Clayton does indeed look like a masterpiece next to this. Julia Roberts needs botox.

Solid quality mainstream entertainment with deliciously evil writing, secure directing and a couple of perfectly fit star-turns from Roberts and Owen, who show true confidence and old-glamour style in their performances.

I get what Gilroy is going for. Convoluted plotting, bantering double-crossing love-interests. On paper it sounds great. Roberts I have little patience with in general and because her teaming with the one-note Owen yields absolutely no chemistry, the movie is a thoroughly charmless affair.

Maybe it has one twist too many, or one too few but something just feels a tad incomplete about it. Nevertheless it's a pretty enjoyable con film, sleekly made with snappy dialogue.

Who gets conned here? We do. Tony Gilroy spins webs throughout every plot point in "Duplicity" that it becomes beyond complicated to keep up with it. Why it works more than not is because the two stars, Julia Roberts and Clive Owen are live-wire sparks turning the movie on its head and getting us to care about them. It's kind of fun how they're both gaming each other and yet so drawn to one another. At the maze's end, the rug is pulled out from under us, but at least we had some A-list talent.

Entertaining enough crime caper romance. The narrative is full of flashbacks which, combined with the double-crossing plot and the large numbers of characters to keep track of, made this all rather confusing. Still, it's always nice to see Wilkinson and Giamatti, and the ending was pretty satisfying.

The fun factor kicks in after 90 min, till then its pretty formulaic, annoying and forgettable. "Michael Clayton" feels like a masterpiece compared to this...

The chemistry between Roberts and Owen is awful. (It doesn't help to have seen them in Closer) Overall that destroys the cat and mouse game, however the film is worth the while for the twists and the great supporting cast.

Bad. Two industrial spies pair up to pull the scam of their lives. This movie tries to be funny, romantic and incredibly intelligent but ends up being a predictable, rose scented turd. Avoid at all costs.

i'm fairly baffled by the premise that there's corporate espionage in the cosmetics industry, but putting my disbelief aside this has a tightly written story that kept me interested and i quite enjoyed.

Overly clever drama about corporate spies joining forces to steal a fortune. The movie plot gets peeled back, a little at a time, to reveal the underlying agenda of the earlier events. But are they the puppeteers, or the puppets? Clive Owen and Julia Roberts are entertaining but everything in this movie is a little too slick to be believable. It would be a lot better if it had been more convincing and less contrived. Acting was good, but the story was unconvincing.

Not so sleek and sexy after all. Formulaic and predictable with a plot that reveals its emptiness by relying purely on constant "surprise" twists. Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti are brilliant though and the opening credits are hilarious.

Very confusing but in an exciting, intriguing sort of way. You're guessing all the way through the film, but that's part of what makes it good. The ending, too, is quite satisfying, IMO. ;) Well acted, interesting editing and filming. I think the cleverness of the script is probably fully realized upon a second viewing. Not the best, but certainly a fun film!

Not particularly bad, not very good. In the end there's no real point which just makes it even more unsatisfying. Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti are great but after their introduction (in the first 10 min) it's pretty much all downhill from there.

Doesn't work as a comedy, doesn't work as a spy thriller, doesn't work as a drama. Tries hard to be one of those overly convoluted and banter-laden crime films that thinks it's clever. And fails there too. Poorly written, badly directed. Relies heavily on flashbacks in an attempt to make up for weak storytelling.

The script might be confusing but has rhythm and an ending that, although slightly predictable from a point on, is distanced from Hollywood stereotypes. The direction has style and tempo, the cast is good and the music excellent. Not as great or sharp as "Michael Clayton" but still a solid commentary on the greedy policies of the big sharks.

A tricky, messy spy game, in which Gilroy tries to mix a romcom and a double-crossing plot at the same time, failing to connect both things -- or even giving his unstoppable plot twists a rewarding finale.

It started off somewhat promising, as I like both Clive Owens and Julia Roberts, and although it tried to be slick, the story dragged on for me, and I wanted to give up after about half an hour. The ending was atypical for such stories, but still unsatisfying--I suppose that was the feeling the director was going for?

Duplicity is a thrilling, confusing and largely exciting film that needed to explain itself better than it ended up doing. There's something to be said about letting the audience fill in the blanks, but when there are moments that go unexplained, while others contradict one another, someone hasn't done their job properly. Still, watching Clive Owen and Julia Roberts constantly have a war of words is entertaining, even if it means that the supporting cast doesn't get enough time on-screen.

Kinda slow/boring. Aims at being a twisty thriller? A spy story? A comedy? A romance? Social commentary? It's ALL of these, & NONE of them well. Opening slow-mo fight scene rules.

Pic is a strange but surprisingly effective combination of romantic comedy and crime caper. From the two leads to the lavish hotel suites throughout Europe, everything looks exquisite. While it keeps the viewer guessing who is conning who, it begins to boarder on the absurd with one contrived, implausible double-cross after another. A worthy effort from writer/director Gilroy but not on the level of his excellent _Michael Clayton_.

Disappointing. The filmmakers seem to think that turning the spy characters against each other every ten minutes ratchets up the tension, when in reality it actually disconnects the audience from really caring about the narrative. The sentimental scene near the end where the characters share their true feelings is truly painful, and I am simply tired of fantasy endings in movies like this--certain characters still get what they want despite their utter failure.

What a load of crap! Without Paul Giamatti and Tom Wilkinson I'd let it go. There was so much of empty talking that I lost interest of the story long before it really stumbled in it's try-to-be wittiness. Julia Roberts and Clive Owen were a big let down as well. But I liked to see the King of the True Blood, Denis O'Hare and a True Blood waitress Lisa Roberts Gillan.

I believe the aim of the movie was to con the audience into thinking it is going to be a great movie. The idea of having a constant twists in the movie probably got the director lost. The chemistry between Julia Roberts and Clive Owen is not the same as what the shared in "Closer".

Duplicity is one of those movies that is based on complex twists and turns such that any enjoyment or satisfaction comes only from solving the puzzle and not from anything else the film has to offer. Even if you do predict the outcome - So what? None of the characters are particularly likeable or have any depth. With an all star cast and probably large budget. This could do much better.

three points about this one: 1, despite being a decent actor, clive owen has a gigantic face, which pretty much voids anything he says even if he's conveying the god's truth 2, julia roberts looks even more like a horse after her recent plastic surgeries, and 3, movies about corporate espionage blow and suck hard at the same time. the upside is, the black cylon dude has a part in this movie, which is kinda cool. yah, that's the upside.

Great opening with Giamatti vs. Wilkinson. The chemistry between Roberts and Owen works for a second time and there are nice touches in the dialogue, but at the end (even if the protagonists appropriately are kinda fucked up) it is just an ordinary thriller. Probably because James Newton Howard was trying desperately to sound like John Powell from Mr. and Mrs. Smith... I don't know.

Some rather fun spy vs. spy moments, but it's all so dumbed down as to be almost all for naught. More spirit of John Le Carre and less fucking Julia Roberts would have helped a lot. Paul Giamatti tucks the movie in his pocket and walks away with it quite handily.

A smart, witty film that uses corporate espionage as a backdrop for a creative romantic comedy. Gilroy's script is dense and complicated, but always clear, and provides the two leads with ample opportunity to show how movie star charisma can be mixed with shrewdly insightful acting to build great performances. Roberts is especially good, dashing off her lines with spirited ease and happy authority, nicely tapping into her character's surplus guile.

If you focus strictly at the surface (or, the mountainous, cavernous windy-road MacGuffin "surprise!" ending surface) then you'll be disappointed; it's a love story hiding in a spy thriller. Seriously, why should you care about haircare pharmaceutical espionage? From the very beginning it's obvious this is more Lover Come Back than Ocean's 11, differences being Roberts is no Doris Day, and Clive hasn't come out yet. Add "Romance" to the listed genres, and this will be a cult classic.
