Agitative. Exploitative. Pretentious filmmaking at its best. Sure, it's skillfully crafted, but it's been quite a while since a film got me this angry.

A somber and unbearably contained slow-burn lacks a satisfying dramatic payoff, but this character study of transactional relationships, and the blurred lines between the exploited and exploiters, remains fascinating throughout, even if its Perelygina's venal and manipulative character which emerges as far more compelling than "Beanpole" herself! Striking and oftimes ugly use of colour provides the perfect portal into this sometimes hyperreal world.

I'm a sucker for the color, but the acting is also great. Feels like it would make a great television series, a la Burning Bush. Sort of reminds me of Christian Petzold's Barbara.

Don't fall in love with the straight girl.

Loved it. Great knitwear also.

A little too long and somewhat boring, but watchable.

Ambitious, but I prefer Portrait of a Lady on Fire or Phoenix, both of which this reminded me of. Too long (even minor dialogue gets excessive amounts of screentime) - and I really could have used some music.

Weird characters and their poor stories (which could easily be condensed into a 15-minute film) culminate in nothingness.

It's always irrestible to unfavorably compare this to Aleksiévitch's masterpiece on women's private war against oppression and misogyny in men's world, but this undeniably lacks the book's orality, natural power and focus on great physical performances. This is a story about love, hate, friendship, sexuality, motherhood and ultimately hope, but it's just too bad it seems stuck in art-house pattern of "look at how beautifully these women live in post-WWII Leningrad".
