No director creates movie magic like Spielberg, and just as any other reasonable child of my generation I have, of course, always adored 'E.T.'. In fact, I love it so dearly that I'm fundamentally suspicious of those mean enough to have placed what's obviously the best children's movie of all time below tier 9 and therefore (arguably unfairly) is of a good mind to remove them from my Kumpel list.

Great kids movies (Wizard of Oz, 7 Faces of Dr. Lao) show the inherent magic INSIDE ourselves; they celebrate the joy--and pain--of simply being alive and human. Manipulative drivel like E.T. show the magic coming from OUTSIDE ourselves. The film's message: a creepy looking alien from outer space will make your life worth living. E.T. is the film for people who think winning the lottery will allow them to live happily ever after.

Quite extraordinary "kid's movie", which opens up to portray a range of issues that still haunt adults. Possibly Spielberg's crowning achievement, a perfect blend of sophistication and innocence, and an incredible performance by E.T. (even if he has been subtly tweaked for the 2002 DVD re-issue). Thomas, MacNaughton and especially Barrymore deliver flawless performances, and Wallace brings a delightful eccentric edge to the mother. Guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and gasp. Wonderful.

Few movies have aged as well as this good-alien fable. It's a genuinely moving tale for the kid in all of us. With Drew Barrymore in probably the cutest performance by a child actress ever.

E.T. represents the apotheosis of a process of the economic and aesthetic transformation of Hollywood: the industrialised infantilisation of audiences. Robert Kolker, A Cinema of Loneliness (4th edn.), p. 332, on the Spielberg machine: "Promising fulfillment of the dreams of childhood, the machine places everyone who comes in contact with it in the position of a child under the control of the father who gives, takes away, promises to give again if the child reacts correctly."

Rarely does a movie have such a good sense of when it needs to be serious. E.T. has a magnificent combination of entertainment value combined with "pipe-down and pay attention" time. It's an extremely well executed film, and the story is touching and unique. Awesome!

To be honest beyond the fantastical whimsies I have never seen what is so great about E.T., even as a child. It has its moments, often simple scenes expertly enhanced by the application of mood setting auditory resources, but nothing ever really grabbed my attention. Even though there are many moments which have since become iconic in film history there is shockingly little substance to back this up.

A childhood classic. For those in my generation, ET taught us all valuable life lessons like tolerance and consideration for things we don't understand and comfort for those that need help. But most importantly, ET taught me how to threaten a kid with a walkie-talkie.

Nothing new to say about this absolutely vintage Spielberg modern classic. So I offer this: Retarded farmer alien wanders from the flock and is left on Earth. He then abuses a young boy by mind melting with him, in order to gain sympathy and help. He's indifferent to the fact that when he gets ill, Elliot also suffers... No? Then how about this: The Extra-Terrestrial is an anagram for Jesus Christ. Wait, where are you going?

It's sentimental, it's Spielberg at his most emotionally manipulative, and it's full of cutesy children-alien scenes but it works when it could have easily fallen apart. The music, story, and rather pleasant look at the 80's suburban life is an example of a modern 80's classic.

I just watched it again for the first time in like 15 years, and I was astounded at how well it held up. The effects and creature are pretty dated and cheesy, but they're shot and presented in such a way that there's not a ton of attention to it and it doesn't take away from the experience. I'm not usually a fan of child actors, but Henry Thomas was amazing. The whole family played well together, the creature was charming, and the antagonists aren't shown until 30 minutes left. It's timeless.

The tail end of this thing is mawkish, but the first hour (if not more) conveys very well this idea of childhood as filled with terror, wonder, disappointment. There's a bit of a feeling of childhood as a dialectic between learning that the world is a scary place not beholden to your whims and finding a comfortable place in it, between exclusion and belonging. And, in a pretty organic way, Spielberg manages to express the impenetrability of the taken-for-granted conventions of the adult world.

This movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and watching it now brings back bad memories of that creepy-ass alien hiding in my closet.

Great fantasy film, one of the best children's films ever made.

My kids loved "sneaky snake" as I dubbed it. I thought it to be a boring, tedious movie.

Great Family movie (though I think the guns on the guys were fine... walkie-talkies, my ass)

So this is what a restrained Spielberg looks like? I like it. Unfortunately, the restraint begins to slip about halfway through, and falls into full-on cheap sentiment by the end. But those early scenes are very effective in setting an atmosphere and a tone for the film. The kids are bearable through most of the movie and the Halloween sequence is a good time.

The most important lesson this film can teach young children is that Reese's Pieces are a delicious candy.

I saw E.T. when I was like 4 and that night I had a nightmare. I don't feel like ever watching it again, and not just because I got scared.

An antecedent to Where the Wild Things Are. Childhood as a slippery, tumultuous series of snapshots that alternate between transcendent joy and unparalleled agony.

Excellent movie. The pacing is just perfect and this is one family movie that doesn't feel the need to play down to kids.

I can actually say I was at the movie on opening night for to see this movie. Does that make me old? I was very, very young. It will forever be a classic in the hearts of so many. There was so much depth to the storyline. The love, dedication, sacrifice and abundance of trust between the characters.

For years the most popular film in history, Spielberg's greatest achievement here is that he makes E.T. (a Carlo Rambaldi creation that's part mechanical, part little-person-in-a-suit, and allegedly voiced by Debra Winger!) the most fully realized character in the film. Warm and true to life (especially in the characterization of the kids, who, today, would be little more than trendily dressed, wise-cracking little creeps), with an exhilarating John Williams score

That memorable score. A classic kids film with a lot of heart. Lots of lessons here and well presented and executed. Holds up pretty well too. Spielberg is a master.

One of the most overrated movies of all time, the alien is butt-fuckin-ugly, the story is boring, the catchprase is also annoying. Fuck this.

A funny-looking rubber puppet and a dorky kid will make you cry, proving that Spielberg is the true master of emotional manipulation (honorable mention to John Williams). Fantastic family entertainment, and a touching story with real depth, warmth and humour. On top of all that, I love the way this film has captured such a beautiful snapshot of 1982 suburban America.

It may have its flaws, but few films capture the same sense of childlike wonder, or deliver such iconic lines, images, and music. Joyful, triumphant cinema.

I LOVE this movie. I used to watch this as a kid, but was never fully aware of the rich thematic complexity that this movie truly had to offer until I was much older. I love the themes of childhood and growing up in a home with parents who are divorced--the subtile and beautifully woven-in references to Peter Pan. And I especially love the similarities between E.T. and Jesus. This was, and will continue to be one of my all-time favorite movies.

I assume this is still a great kids movie. I don't remember it all that well, but with a kid on the way I'm sure I'll revisit it. And if that kid doesn't like it cause E.T. isn't digital I'll punish him with a viewing of "The Thing."

Were E.T. released today in animated form, it could easily pass for a Pixar classic. An intimate look on the soul of a child and friendship. A magical adventure that will warm your cold, black heart even if it tries too hard in the third act.

I saw this when it first came out in the theater as a kid, & saw it for the second time, in the theater again, tonight, thanks to Hillsborough Cinemas throwback Wednesdays & a friend who works there & got us in free. Like every Spielberg film I've ever seen it's a bit (or a lot) schmaltzy & the score is so blatantly & badly manipulative I wanna puke (not quite as bad as the Jurassic Park films tho), but it's still a really cute kids' flick that I haven't become too cynical to enjoy.
