Earth (1998)

Deepa Mehta directed this stirring tale -- the second movie in a trilogy preceded by Fire and followed by Water -- about the religious and civil wars that broke out in India and Pakistan in the 1947 battle to gain independence from the British. Earth is based on the autobiographical novel Cracking India by Bapsi Sidhwa and is told through the eyes of a little girl, Lenny (Maia Sethna), who has one leg in a brace. (Netflix)

Most of the characters have little depth and mostly the film is just about one or more of the characters standing around and watching the tragedy unfold while offering bits of commentary. Since I didn't find the characters themselves interesting I had a hard time getting invested. This was a terrible time period full of tragedy ... [Full Review]

An interesting perspective on the wars between India and Pakistan. The part of the plot that showed how a group of friends with different religions/races/backgrounds essentially splitting along with the war was especially interesting to me and were a great way of looking at it. Glad I got to see it in a class because I never would have even heard of it otherwise.

Tries too hard to be intelligent and artsy and leaves little impact overall.

A decent allegory with likeable characters. Nothing really stood out though.
