The best thing about this one is the cast! The only clinker in the bunch is Beverly Michaels. Stanwyck wasn't quite convincing as the stalwart virtuous wife, but everybody else is very good, especially Heflin and Ava. Also features crisp cameos from our eventual First Lady and Fred Mertz. The story is a little on the soap-operaish side. I suppose the finale must've seemed a bit of a shocker for the time (no happy ending tied in a bow for this one).

Outstanding melodrama could find DALLAS or DYNASTY tracing its roots to its tale of 'shocking' behaviour and venal back-stabbing, but this quintet of stars in peak form, and LeRoy's snappy direction help make high-art from trash; Stanwyck, heartbreaking as the wronged wife, and Gardner as the trampy home-wrecker take top honors; the sizzling scenes between Mason and Gardner are worth the price of admission! Charisse's performance is also notable as a thematic counterpoint to Stanwyck.

Worth watching for Barbara Stanwyck alone. She avoids all the pitfalls of playing the noble, long-suffering, so very wronged wife (so often they end up sniveling and I end up hating them), and her scenes with Van Heflin are the highlight of the movie. Ava Gardner is lots of fun as the minx that practically redefines "homewrecker". James Mason just isn't very interesting as the painfully weak, philandering husband. Not great art, but compulsively watchable.

Enjoyable melodrama which unnecessary turned into a murder story. These amazing characters didn't need that sensationalism to make this adulterous conflict work. Barbara Stanwyck was sweet, James Mason was her egotistical bastard husband, Van Heflin was the trustworthy everyman and Ava Gardner the dangerous mistress. And combined East Side, West Side (1949) brought a engaging affair.
