I'm sure I'm supposed to think that some of this is a laugh riot, & to be sure it's pretty amusing. The strength of the movie lies in its drama though, which is pretty solid.

A hilarious film which captures all the little details of a particular slice of Britain's history and culture, and then uses them lovingly to create a brightly-coloured caricature. The characters are all lovable in their way, even the authoritarian father, and the brilliant dialogue is delivered with impeccable comic timing. Looks like the cast and crew worked very hard, and had a load of fun, making this culture comedy something special.

Colourful comedic drama that actually has some disturbing depth. I found this enjoyable and memorable at the time of release , and still do but it does appear dated in its comic representation of some unacceptable things - although I think an accurate representation of 1970's life.

Top badass moment? It made me want to go and buy some chips. This is a comedy with a surprising amount of dramatic bollocks, which does its best to show us how grim it really was up north in the 70s. However, for some reason that eludes me, it does feel weirdly dated to watch now. Om Puri is always good value and Meenah’s silly broom dance is surprisingly cool. You know, this is a really hard film to write much about, I’m really struggling here! No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
