I always think that the female leads in Chaplin films are the same woman, but they never are. Specifically, I thought that this one was from The Circus, who I thought was also in The Gold Rush. NOPE! THREE DIFFERENT WOMEN! I guess I'm just racist against bitches born in 1900.

From the fraction of his output I've seen, this is my favorite Chaplin short. Funny and spellbinding.

Charlie tackles the ills of the slums (quite literally): violence (both general and domestic), poverty, drug abuse, you name it. A bit of an odd one as far as the premise goes, but the execution runs more towards zany chase scenes and silly clonks to the head, with Chaplin turning in one of his most frenzied physical performances. I never really thought I'd see a picture where an accidental cocaine injection to the rear end makes Charlie Chaplin into some kind of supercop, but there it is...

Proof positive that Chaplin can make ANYTHING funny.

I was going to write about how this tried to tackle the social issues of its time, like the dichotomy between rich and poor, the ugliness of an abusive marriage, the unequal status of police and citizens, even drug usage ... but then in the ending Chaplin unleashes a flying kick, which was undoubtedly Eric Cantona's inspiration eighty years later.

Chaplin becomes a cop, immediately abuses his power, uses chemical weapons on a dude, takes drugs, and beats up an entire street gang. Fun stuff.

More intricate than his earlier stuff - namely the likes of The Vagabond and Pawnshop. Follows a tighter structure and delivers better slapstick. Some of the action was great - kicking a band of bad guys; priceless.

a good short with enough action to satisfy. definitely superior to some of his shorts in the pre-20's era, and proof that he has what it takes to move on to the feature length outlet.

Amazing how funny it can be for a silent film from 1917, and violent too.

The ending was an eye-roller but this is still very much in line with his great, late pieces of the Mutual two-reelers.

charlie chaplin is a good guy because he's a cop who beats up random strangers who in turn beat up other random strangers, and that's what all good cops should do.

Tramp as agent of personal, communal, and even religious reformation and transformation. Also, everything actually shot on Easy Street, especially the crowds alternating creeping into the frame from each side.

Through sheer stubborn repetition of gags that might have been mildly interesting the first time, 23 minutes is made to feel like an hour. The contrast of tramp the policeman to some of his later adventures is simply baffling.

These earlier Chaplins seem to mostly avoid the sentimentality that I think made some of his later movies so strong in favor of pure slapstick. Most of it is good slapstick, if you're into that, and it's interesting seeing Chaplin developing his character.
