It's two years after the Nazi's invasion of Norway and in a small fishing village that is headquarters to 150 German soldiers, the 800 locals are stewing, waiting for a supply of arms so they can revolt. Leaders include Karen Stensgard, whose father is the town's doctor and not all that sure that an open revolt will accomplish much and whose brother has proven disloyal to Norway previously, and Gunnar Brogge, a fisherman who was planning to sail to England to fight but changed his mind on hearing of English arms being delivered.(imdb)

Wartime propaganda film with a few too many strident touches to go over well today, but it must have been gangbusters at the time (I'm thinking the church scene, in particular). Errol Flynn ostensibly stars, but it's more of a team effort, as befits a story about collective resistance to Nazis on one's home turf (in this case, Norway). Smart script from Robert Rossen, and Lewis Milestone has a knack for the battle scenes, when they do finally come.

That was quite a massacre on Norwegian soil. Surprisingly grotesque by classic Hollywood, and with so much of that charm toned down from the usual Errol Flynn vehicle. It was clear Edge of Darkness (1943) was serious business. About uniting and sacrificing oneself against the Nazi occupants so that good will prevail, regardless of consequence. Could have needed some more interesting stuff gong on in the middle, but that was a real heavy-hitting conclusion!
