El Amor Brujo

I really like how the trilogy has this progression from reality to fantasy. Saura uses the same dancers/actors throughout the series, and they're fantastic. Once again, the dances are amazing... gorgeous, expressive, colorful. The only problem is that there aren't enough of them. Although the tale being told (kind of a gypsy flamenco ghost story) is compelling and full of passion, some of the dramatic scenes are a little repetitive or drawn out. Nonetheless, an enchanting film.

The least artistically successful of Saura's flamenco trilogy. From the first moment, the camera panning a sound stage is far less involving than the backstage scenes of the other two. It's as if what he gained in technique and budget, he lost in intimacy and immediacy. And the extraneous plot elements imposed on de Falla's ballet scenario add little of value. Things improve greatly when the dancing kicks in around the 35-minute mark--the real reason to watch.
