Leyton and his lifelong friend Modesto are both fishermen and as close as brothers, but very different in temperament. The braggart Modesto is a slave to progress, while the more unpretentious Leyton is content with the simple life. Modesto marries Marta, a beautiful young naïf, who longs for the sexual fulfillment Modesto (who is "like a rabbit - one jump up and one jump down") is incapable of providing.

A classic sex farce (the fisherman's wife) told in flashback (a nice touch), and set in Horcón, the "Santa Cruz" of Chile. A side plot of a get rich quick scheme with an Italian land speculator adds a bit of geopolitics to the simple tale of the cuckold and the playboy. The documentary-style scenes of the seaside fish market are reminiscent of the Italian neorealist La Terra Trema, but the story sends up small-town life rather than sanctifying it.
