BICYCLE THIEVES by way of Tennessee Williams; a frustrating (and frustrated) drama which keeps its audience wilfully at arm’s length. Ulman crafts this with care and deliberate attention to the lives of her characters, but it is a strange and discordant journey with stylistic flourishes seeming ostentatious and pretentious (especially the old fashioned “wipes” between scenes). It does successfully create a mood of spiraling despair, but it's ultimately an unpleasant (and unenlightening) journey.
