This was the perfect end to a slew of 1990's teen movies. This one had an edge not seen in its peers--usually just melodramas where weiner kids complain about adolescence. But Election's caustic tone hilariously showed the similarities in high school, politics, and what can drive immature people to become teachers. While Payne never hit me as hard with his future works, here he knocked it out the park. The humor goes from horror to acceptance, and it is endlessly quotable. Highly recommended.

Excellent dark comedy with several very good performances. It is Witherspoon however who steals the show with a performance that initially seems brash and big, but is in fact rather subtle and very clever. This is a funny movie, with a water tight script, that is well worth your time.

Alex Payne's best film is also the best high school movie of the 90s. The comedy is incredibly dark, twisted, pessimistic, evil, and probably outright depressing to the weak-willed, and I love the fuck out of the movie for it. The use of four separate narrators is novel and genius. All the casting is insanely perfect, especially Broderick twisting himself from the coolest high school kid of the 80s into the 90's least cool high school teacher.

A film that rather offensively takes the well honored and reputable history of...nevermind. This movie won my vote but unfortunately played on Election Day, so I didn't get out to cast it. I mean, it's almost two hours. There's only so much I can do.

Looking back at the movies of 1999 - arguably (read: easily?) the greatest movie year ever - it's amazing how fresh and relevant most of them still manage to feel, and Election is just as solid, original and entertaining as pretty much anything that came out that year. With movies like Wild, Walk the Line and Election, Witherspoon has shown incredibly versatility over the years, and everything from the playful editing to the cinematography and performances make it a total home run.

I'm really starting to like Alexander Payne. I put off seeing this movie for years because I expected a typical 90s high school comedy. This is so much better than that. High school is portrayed very bleakly and realistically and Matthew Broderick has never been better. A really delightful dark comedy.

Holy cow, vote for Payne! This, his best effort, is a wickedly funny and bafflingly dark satire which plays with genre and style with remarkable virtuosity and ingenuity. There are frequent, audacious shifts between multiple (and very different) voice-over narrators, and I don't think I've seen polyphony on film in quite this way before. If anybody has, please let me know.

Largely exists in the same territory as "Rushmore" from a year prior, and as long as that film exists this will pale in comparison. Reese is lightning here. The film has /some/ whip to it but I guess I just like my black comedies a bit blacker.

I really enjoyed it. Broderick doesn't play a very likable guy, but that is sort of the point. The performance is still solid and the lengths he goes to to make sure Flick doesn't get elected are so bad! Witherspoon is an absolute delight, and I like Chris Klein as well. I really like the way Payne and Taylor write characters. They always feel like real people. This also has some great humor. Watch it for the cast alone.

This one pulled off, what I thought, would be an impossible feat: for 90 minutes, I enjoyed a Chris Klein performance. Remarkable. I wouldn't quite put this on the level of Payne's other character-driven comedy "Sideways", but it's close. Witherspoon, Broderick and Campbell mostly play variations on "types" but Payne is so completely committed to his characters and willing to see them through to their extremes, with enough subtle turns to keep things lively and interesting throughout.

Payne's best, Election feels like a twisted John Hughes coming of age picture: the characters are unlikable, sometimes it's actually hard to care about them, but somehow they also make you feel miserable when they make mistakes and happy when they make things right. And Broderick's finest since... Ferris Buellers's Day Off.

Top badass moment? Saw my first bumble bee of the year this afternoon; it landed in my wheelbarrow. So to celebrate this, Jim being stung by a bee has to be today’s badass moment. I once got stung on the ass by a wasp whilst I was trying to negotiate the cost to dig a pond with a JCB driver. Don't think I got a very good deal. I like this film. It’s so much better and darker than it sounds like it’s going to be. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

so far, my best of Alexander Payne. it has wonderful details. e.g. these ambitious young people will be senator's lawyers in the future. also the film perfectly shows the life of a typical high school teacher, successive but unhappy, stuck with a monotonous marriage. the anxiety problems that are affecting to people because of the education system have been shown effectively and funny way using an ordinary American high school. and i think Tammy is the closest character to the Payne's identity.

Hilarious, boldly bleak, wonderfully acidic. Broderick manages to be totally despicable without ever winking at the audience or letting on that he has any idea what kind of man he is, and the resulting veracity makes the icky all-too-realism of the story sting so much more. Witherspoon gives one of the great comic performances of recent years, and Klein, whatever he did after this, is a talent. Just a few unnecessary narrative missteps keep this from being a masterpiece, but great nonetheless.

This is very much a quirky, MTV type film. The characters are somewhat stereotyped, with the high school swot and the sports jock. Its a reasonably easy watch I suppose, although there are some sex references and strong language present at times, its perhaps a little crude, which might embarrass some I suppose. The cast are good and its amusing at times.I suppose really its about pettiness, in different ways. I thought it was a pretty entertaining and reasonably good film overall.

Well above average high school movie, with an intertwined plot, well-written script (Broderick's final monologue is brilliant) and fascinating characters, all of whom are either terrible people or morons. Although that leaves you without a truly likable character to connect with, it's great for a story about corrupt high school politics that abounds with moral dilemmas. Or are they ethical dilemmas?

I can understand Payne's detractors (he really does seem to have pretty serious contempt for his characters, and clearly revels in meting out punishment for their transgressions), but this really worked for me as a comedy. A hilarious and honest examination of facade. Deep down, everyone hates each other, and it's no different when it's a conflict between an adult and a teenager. Tracy Flick is Tumblr as a human being, and Reese Witherspoon is as excellent as advertised. But Matthew Broderick is just as good, and some really great casting -- seeing him go from Ferris Bueller to Jim McAllister is a delight.

I teach high school, and Payne and Perotta get it right. All the performances are excellent, particularly Witherspoon's. Also, I like the risks the movie takes making Matthew Broderick's character unsympathetic. We're on his side, but reluctantly--and that's the way it should be.

I don't know how to peg Alexander Payne's "Election" simply because the particular dark humor in effect and slower pace did not make my cup of tea. The performances of the actors are fine, the approach and storyline make for a unique experience, but the movie has this uncomfortable way about it. I know that's the intent, but I was left cold and mostly unamused.

Matthew Brodrick is a high school teacher disillusioned with his life. Reese Witherspoon an ambitious candidate for class president. Wanting to avoid her, he encourages another student to campaign against her. The little sister was great. After one day of mistakes, suddenly his life unravels and he is ruined. But ultimately that delivers him to a better life. The story feels genuine, and illustrates how easily small indiscretions can derail your life, and how that can sometimes be a good thing.

Consistently entertaining and amusingly quirky and yet, somewhat of a disappointment. Much to my surprise, for the most part, "Election" felt very tame in its -mainly untargeted- satire. The most interesting story arc was by far that of Broderick (love how his jealousy and detestation comes up front again in the end) but the characters of Witherspoon and Klein, although funnily caricatured, felt rather cardboard and uninteresting.

Election is a funny, enjoyable little movie. It's not perfect, but its flaws are minor when looking at the big picture, and its cartoon characters, are all somehow relatable. You either were one of these people, or you knew one. It's not a film that's going to hurt feelings, but you'll appreciate the commentary that goes on throughout, even if the ending doesn't help serve its point and it could have either been expanded upon or trimmed a bit more to help remove some redundancy.

The film falls just shy of greatness because of one thing it doesn't do well at all: sympathize with Tracy Flick. It's not enough: through most of the film, it's too easy to see her just as a hyper-ambitiou, annoying young woman. This is an excellent and thorough character study, but god is it hard to watch. The level to which this man is willing to fuck both himself and others over in petty, stupid ways simply because he's been jolted from his mediocre life of coasting on being an okay person is portrayed in incredible, disturbing detail. Brilliant. Everyone's a prick, except those ignorant enough to slide through life unawares. Just as you're sympathising -- or hating -- a character, they do something to flip it on its head; even the loathsome climber that is Tracy Flick has her moments of pathos, and Mr. McAllister frequently wades into the petty squabbles of his students, with all their concomitant immaturity. Sums up perfectly the nuclear reactor that is a small-town school.
