Austen's most irritating "heroine" is made even more vapid and annoying by Paltrow's empty portrayal. She utters not one line that sounds or feels genuine. Ewan McGregor struts around looking rather like Fabio...and he SINGS (!). The whole thing has the look of, and is on the same intellectual level as, a Lifetime TV movie. Juliet Stevenson livens things up quite a bit, thank god, and Phyllida Law steals every scene she's in without uttering a word.

While it's no BBC's Pride & Prejudice, I still enjoy this enough to frequently rewatch it. However, be warned that there are plenty of changes from the book - for example Mr. Woodhouse's character is almost completely erased, which is a real shame, as he's a lot of fun. Most actors are tolerable, but Sophie Thompson nails Miss Bates and Juliet Stephenson ditto Mrs. Elton (see her also nailing Mrs. Squeers in Nicholas Nickelby!)

Emma is not about very much except the utopian espionage of a limited clique of people who will all basically have to marry each other at some point, if they haven't already. Either you are on a wavelength with this material or you are not.

Mediocrity at it's finest. There's nothing *bad* about it, but there isn't anything special either. As an adaption, it's fine. Though, like most films based on Austen's work, it lacks the bite and wit found in her novels. While Paltrow and Northam have decent chemistry, it wasn't enough to keep me invested in their relationship. But the biggest problem is that it just doesn't feel cinematic - the direction, sets, costumes, and cinematography are all reminiscent of a BBC production from 1986.

Maybe the costume dramas are subtle commentaries on class and gender two centuries ago - but they still strike me as early Chic Lit. A faithful and decent production of the work - my score is more a reflection on the writer.

I found the film mostly annoying. Firstly because of the fake British accents and secondly the empty headed, idiotic characters. Only recommended for the lovers of sappy, romantic comedy.
