The fact that my kids watch this at least twice daily and I still don't hate it speaks a lot in its favor.

Really good! Why wouldn’t it be? Disney continues to produce films about family and inclusiveness. So what. They do it well. I love that they released a movie like this. Kids will likely relate to the main character in her story that is both entertaining and important. It’s stunningly animated and the music was all really well made and performed. I’m not really sure what more one could ask for. This is a perfect movie to take the family to this holiday season. Mirabel is already iconic.

This was charming, colourful and imaginative, and I was into the music. I'm rather enjoying Disney casting the net a bit wider for inspiration and tales to inform their output. My 9-year old was a big fan, incidentally.

Rises above similar fare: The characters begin singing to camera, at the height of fantasy, before they gradually start singing towards each other; it’s driven by trauma unaddressed, the weight of stress cracking the story’s foundation, its primary theme Burnout (a candle is a literal visualization). Most importantly, the character with the fullest arc is not our lead, but matron Abuela. It recalls Walt’s most realized fantasies - adults rediscovering the child’s perspective, to achieve wonders.

Typical Disney - a sugary kids' movie with cardboard characters and predictable plot solve. Colors, design and animation are fine and there are numerous quick gags scattered throughout which makes it watchable.

I think there's a couple things that make this standout from other Disney films; the music, and the storytelling. A lot of the songs sounded modernly produced, and were quite bumpin'. Disney usually has their typical villain to wreak havok and cause problems, but in this It's all about familial pressure and how it effects each of the characters. It felt very fresh and relatable. I loved It, and thought all of the characters were enjoyable to watch and easy to love. I give 9 Brunos out of 10.

It's technically proficient but just not the movie for me. Once they introduced all the characters with different powers, I knew I'd have to sit through problem-solution interactions and hear a well-crafted (if a bit too poppy) song from Lin-Manuel Miranda with every single person. Nice clothing. Fav scene: the real magic was love and family, err, I mean Abuela single-arm carrying 3 infants on a long hike so soon after giving birth while being chased by ICE on horseback, err, unknown federales.

At the risk of chewing my food about a dozen times over now, man this Disney movie is pretty, isn't it? Like so many others, the music and soundtrack, central to the storytelling, is phenomenal - not surprising with Lin-Manuel Miranda among the head writers. Towards the end, as always, the beauty and the emotion got to me, but I think I have to set this a step behind the best of these movies only because the story leading up to the end didn't catch me the same as, say, Coco or Soul or Zootopia.

The nuts and bolts here all pretty much work - the characters are a fun bunch, the animation is beautiful, and the film is lively and breezy. But there are a few things that hold me back from really loving Encanto. Maybe the biggest one is that I don’t really love LMM’s songs for this. I liked them, but there’s nothing here to match his excellent work on Moana. Nonetheless, it’s a solidly good time worthy of its company in the Disney musical canon even if it doesn’t rival the best.

Encanto is a charming, well-made film that tells a thematically-rich, family-focused story. The animation and voice acting is great, giving each character enough of a personality to stand-out but not too much that they become overbearing. The music is enjoyable and catchy, though the songs are a little too faced-paced to be memorable. What the film truly excels at is its themes of inclusion and the stifling nature of rigid expectations. Ultimately, it's an enjoyable film that puts story first.

A great animation and a lovely message aren't enough to sustain an entire movie: if the story is weak, lot of situations feel forced, there are spottable plot holes, the musics are dreadful and some elements of the plot are recycled from thousands of others works, the final mark can't be positive. Disney, please, leave the animation movies only to Pixar (which is already your).

Colourful and cheerful Disney feature almost combats the too familiar elements of its tale by virtue of its rich ethnic specificity, successful employment of a strong (and moving) emotional ballast into its storytelling, and employing a fine (if unremarkable) soundtrack, which seems destined to be recreated on a Broadway stage! At its core, this story has been played out many times before (and better); it also fumbles the finale by never providing its heroine with a genuine moment of catharsis.

One extremely powerful flashback sequence aside, the movie felt... small. It is a celebration of mediocrity in a very confined setting. Due to the sheer size of cast, we only get to know the characters on a surface level. It relies entirely on cultural exoticism but once the novelty wears off, the viewer is left with a very mediocre story that grantedly has decent messaging. But on a deeper level Encanto offers nothing original when aesthetics removed. Sub par performance from Disney.

My expectations may have been too high since Disney has done well lately, but I didn't love this one. It was decent with pretty animation. The music was pretty good, maybe I am getting Lin-Manuel Miranda overload.

I have to admit I'm becoming a little fed up with all these stories of superheroes, magic, and how we are powerless compared to these wonderful (or terrible) characters, so this typical looking Disney movie, about this "magic deprived" girl, was a really pleasant surprise. Especially when you add to this familiar yet refreshing story, the cool songs and nice animation.

Magical, colourful, and full of life, in every way possible. Between the animated house and fantastic animation, the enchanting music and enchanted characters, every brick and bridge and Bruno (I won't talk about him though) delights. Just as impressive is the nuanced family portrait at its foundations that doesn't shy away from tragedy (see the opening and then flashback to fleeing by the river) or brokenness ("You're the one breaking our home!") before its beautiful build up to the end.

I must be too dumb to grasp all the lore of this movie for actual babies, but there were things about where the conflict even stemmed from I felt puzzled by. But it’s still enjoyable as a movie with no villain and limited conflict stemming only from mischief and mysteries; kind of a magical/musical hangout movie. Best song: ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno.’ Hottest chick: Dolores. Er, wait a sec, lemme just… *checks Disney Wiki, assures Dolores is of age* Ok good. Hottest chick Dolores

A lot to like in this film- a great variety of family personalities, the genuine criticism of confining family roles getting in the way of letting them live their lives- it's animated beautifully. Musically the numbers are catchy but they run with the moment, so there's not a tonal flow to the pieces, more an.... ADD approach, and is distracting, especially when giving information at supersonic speed. The magic is vague and unexplained, and that's getting old as an afterthought in Disney films.

With a plethora of kids movies exploring deep, mature themes, "Encanto" seems to be regurgitating the mundane message that everyone, even the ordinary people are special and unique. A mantra that Mr. Rogers used for thirty years. Disney can't stoop to things we tell four year olds to remain relevant, they ought to have embraced the aspiration of greatness and overcoming adversity rather than gaining acceptance for just being yourself. Moreover, I grow tired of these broadway tinged soundtracks.

A wonderful and beautiful movie about tradition and familial expectation. The only thing that could have made it better was a little more development of characters; everything was literally explained via song. Thankfully, the songs are very good.

I loved much of the music (but let's not talk about Bruno) and the smaller scope, but the film's pacing is off and rushes over multiple major plot and character developments, so that most narrative payoffs feel unearned.

Having just watched Frozen 2 I had my reservations about exposing myself to yet another Disney musical, but boy, does Lin-Manuel Miranda write better songs. The story is tried and tested for sure, but wonderfully vibrant and charming all the same.

This movie has this weird tendency to just dump down songs in the most awkward moments imaginable to such a degree even the main character lampshades this. Compared to other Disney flicks, this is slightly better considering its attempts at introspection which is handled decently enough, but the anti-traditionalist framing is hard to take seriously and they really pussied out on having an ending that didn't reset things to the best possible outcome, which amusingly goes against its own themes.

It's a pretty straightforward Disney narrative, but very well-done, and the biggest complaint I'd have is that I wish we'd gotten more of the secondary characters' arcs. But it's got lots of wonderful energy and spectacular art - not just "CGI rendered in great detail" but visuals that communicate strongly and beautifully; I love Maribel's skirt in particular. And it had a strong sense of place and time - I don't know what Colombians thought of this, but it felt very grounded from here.

A wonderfully colorful animated world with great characters, just like you would imagine Disney to bring. But I do not come from a culture where adding a bunch of lame singing dialogue songs is a thing that's relevant to me. I generally use those musical numbers as piss breaks, and this features way more piss breaks than I'd need in a day. Just tell a story. Add a theme song or two is you need, but please don't tell all the important parts with children's songs like this.

Mostly a mish-mash of random scenes designed to be dopemine inducing visual megablasts. Like watching a film by Ritalin-addicts. Within 10 minutes we have about 120 characters jostled in, non of them given any character however, all 'characters' are simply defined by some 'issue'. No ability of actual storytelling on display, everything is just thrown in as and when needed. Children won't understand or be interested in much of it, it's clearly cynically aimed at adults - student demo.

It was good, colorful and shiny, as all recent Disney animations, but I think there was a critical hole in the plot about the role of Mirabel in the family in the latter part. I felt like it was basically saying, "mediocre people can make a difference, because mediocre people can make a difference." And the songs were quite disappointing.

While its resolution is missing some cohesion, ebullient colour, delightful design, and fun music brightly entertain during its runtime. That there is profundity I missed while watching (with the exception of Luisa’s powerful number, which did not fail to move me) I can appreciate, but I just wish I didn’t need to read a twitter thread or rewatch it to grasp its layers; honestly, I still felt really bad for Mirabel at the very end.

There were /several/ scenes of this movie that unexpectedly made me tear up; they just really hit the nail on the head when it came to the representation of truly difficult situations with and feelings about people you love dearly. The songs unfortunately were mostly somehow misses imo, but they still actually did a good job of enhancing the story. Go figure. The beauty of family, and of community in general, shined in every facet of this wonderful movie. Still an instant classic for me.

Really beautiful animation! Too bad that the characters were uninspired, the story was very predictable and the setting was the same for the whole movie. Some travel or exploration would've been great. Almost feels like a Frozen wannabe. Also during a lot of songs characters just talked and did stuff (more so than normal) which really weakened them.
