Endless Poetry

2016
Drama, Fantasy
2h 8m
Endless Poetry portrays Alejandro Jodorowsky's young adulthood, set in the 1940s and 50s, in the electric capital city of Santiago. There, he decides to become a poet and is introduced, by destiny, into the foremost bohemian and artistic circle of the time. He meets Enrique Lihn, Stella Diaz Varín, Nicanor Parra and many others of the country's young, promising and unknown artists who would later become the titans of Latin America's literature. One of the best films I have seen in a while. Won't be for everyone, but it's outrageously good. The fast pace slows down a bit towards the middle, but by the end you'll realise and appreciate just what an experience the film has been. Great work of art.

Less 'showy' and disconnected than Dance, E.P, despite the usual expected digressions, zeroes in more precisely--that is to say, discursively--on the notion that art is 'constitutive of the self' and is therefore inseperable from it, especially for those who heed its 'call' and are prepared to make great sacrifices in the pursuit of it. It's a romantic view of art that seems anachronistic today, but it's expressed with warmth and sincerity, and Adan bears an uncanny resemblance to this father.

a little self-indulgent obviously. sometimes he seems like he's trying to convince himself more than us. involves more personal things rather than critiquing society as a whole like with the holy mountain, but still good.

The pictures are pretty cool, but they couldn't weigh up the plot which came across pretty unimaginative. Jodorowsky idealized himself too much for my taste and his views on life somehow were more interesting in his infamous works from the seventies. But "Poesía Sin Fin" has its strong moments which are indeed full of light. But it can be a bit of a drag to get there.

A few slow stretches towards the middle, but overall a feast for the eyes and a celebration of the imagination. Every scene leaves you wondering which outlandish place the next one is gonna take us to. This is exactly what the medium of film was meant for!

Somewhat episodic but still a little more cohesive than DANCE OF REALITY, perhaps, with the added benefit of having less shots of a child protagonist wincing in fear, pain or anxiety. At times veers a little towards sentimentality but with some touching moments, too. Interesting that, like the earlier film, it shows Chilean Nazism. Also interesting to see Chilean poets Enrique Lihn and Nicanor Parra as characters, both of whom seem like interesting figures, though I know nothing of their work.

Ahhh. Everything Jodorowsky is in here, except the style and emotion have developed in a far more delicate, as opposed to outrageous and brash, direction. He is a master at creating a succession of wildly different moods in a seamless way.
