Herman (Ron Silver) discovers that the wife (Anjelica Huston) he thought he lost in the Holocaust is alive--which only disrupts the balance he has with his new wife (Margaret Sophie Stein) and mistress (Lena Olin). A tragicomedy in the style of a farce, with twists and reversals galore, it's a heady but compelling fable. Paul Mazursky's direction is some of his most lyrical, and the acting is strong. Herman and the ladies' indulgence of him does get tiresome, but I'd like to return to this one.
