Bumbling Ernest P. Worrell is assigned to jury duty, where a crooked lawyer notices a resemblance with crime boss Mr. Nash, and arranges a switch. Nash assumes Ernest's job as a bank employee, while Ernest undergoes Nash's sentence to the electric chair. But instead of killing him, the electrocution gives Ernest superhuman powers, enabling him to escape from jail and foil Nash's attempt to rob the bank. (imdb)

“You are slime, Ernest P Worrell” Insane jail lit like some Italian Giallo fever dream with all the hues of pink you could dream of, the prison guards are dressed in the harshest pinks. Ernest movie finally figuring out to focus just on Ernest. Gorgeous woman wants to find out what the P in Ernest P. Worrell stands for. Dr. Otto would destroy Nash. Watching two of these back to back fried my brain. Knowwhutimean

Quite amusing when I'm in the right mood, but in no way is it a "good" movie.

Hey Vern, don't worry I'm gonna get you a lawyer, and we're gonna bail you out in no time. How was I supposed to know that was illegal, and you would be responsible. Just stay calm, I went to jail in my third movie after a little mistaken identity mishap with my evil doppelganger, and I ended up fine. However, I did end up on death row and in the electric chair, but since I'm a living cartoon the state didn't accidentally kill me, it just gave me electricity super powers instead-knowhatimean

The Ernest films are a dark cycle about a disillusioned Vietnam vet spiralling into delusions.

One of the few 'Ernest' movies I can actually remember enough of to distinguish it from its also terrible siblings and give it a score... a very low score!

Of course it's Ernest, no big surprises. Ernest gets mistaken for the head badguy of the jail and well you can guess the rest. Fun for kids.

It's an Ernest movie. Criticize it all you want, but it will always be an Ernest movie. Basically, if you say it isn't fantastic, there will be few people to disagree with you. But there are always a few amusing moments in an Ernest movie and this one is no different.

Even though I am a fan of Ernest, especially his commercials, but I don't think it has translated too well to movies except for one and we all know which one I'm referring to. There were a couple of laugh out loud moments, but otherwise this was a borefest that is more for kids than it is for adults. Several recognizable faces, but the cast was just as good as Varney was in this movie. Easy to watch with kids, but otherwise this is something to stay away from.

Not very good, but some of the jokes are funny enough to get a smirk. It's a comedy of its era.

And so it carries on, Ernest Goes to Jail continues the streak of awful cheesiness. Seriously who kept making these movies. I laughed some but it's just so ridiculousness. The idea interested me and the premise seemed alright (at first).

It may not be as poignant or as heartwarming as Ernest Goes to Camp, but it certainly better than Ernest Scared Stupid. I think.

No, it isn't real good but I've loved Jim Varney from the first time I saw his Hardee's commercials in the mid 70's

On the up side bad Jim Varney looks kinda nice, on the down side people talk about how dark this film gets and talk about a rape scene that isn't anything of the sort. It's not dark or subversive, it's crap
