A three-part anthology film about love and sexuality: a menage-a-trois between a couple and a young woman on the coast of Tuscany; an advertising executive under enormous pressure at work, who, during visits to his psychiatrist, is pulled to delve into the possible reasons why his stress seems to manifest itself in a recurring erotic dream; and a story of unrequited love about a beautiful, 1960s high-end call girl in an impossible affair with her young tailor. Let's break it down. Wong Kar-Wai's segment is close to perfect. Antonioni's segment is just a drag. Soderbergh is somewhere in the middle, with an interesting experiment that doesn't quite gel. So, it averages out to average, but again, Wong Kar-Wai's segment is so good that it makes the entire thing worthwhile.

Wong Kar Wai and Soderbergh are geniuses, Antonioni shows only a fragment of what he used to do. But still, despite the talent of these three, the film is best enjoyed as three separate entities, not one cohesive whole.

So I went into this with an understanding of a consensus that Soderbergh's entry was irrelevant [partly true in consideration to the main theme, but I still got enjoyment out of it], Antonioni was trash [Boobs are aplenty, but it offers characteristically ambiguous and succulent text/characters. It just doesn't express itself fully in the brief time], & that Kar Wai Wong was the highlight [actually the dullest entry, a kind of In the Mood For Love spasm with no bite]. Hmm.

To some degree, all three films suffer from the same problem of pretentiousness - the best is Antonioni’s segment, which at least fully leans into the abstract nature of the the topic at hand, using some quite stunning scenery and evocative performances from Nemni and Ranierito to suggest a mood – by trying for profundity, Kar-Wai and Soderbergh feel trivial and silly in the shorter format - Soderbergh's especially doesn’t work at all, with Arkin’s clownish character particularly baffling.

Disjointed when the three stories are supposed to be relevant to each other.

It's ironic, really: the very worst movie of the three movies (The Dangerous Thread of Things) came from the very best director of the three directors hired (Michelangelo Antonio).

Kar-Wai's The Hand is just about one of the greatest moments I've ever had viewing a short film. It's too bad Antonioni's film is nearly unwatchable and borderline inane. Soderburgh's is merely below-average. When the attempt to fuse these films together coherently doesn't work, you have a mess.

Even the Wong doesn't really work. It's too short for him to work his magic. Still the best short film I've ever seen but the rest of the collection is boring. Half of the Antonioni is taken up by a naked girl dancing on the beach. Robert Downey Jr. Plays Robert Downey Jr. in a chair. 80 then for The Hand, 10 for both of whatever the other two were titled.

I hate giving one score to an anthology film, but pretty much anything positive I have to say goes to Wong's segment, The Hand, which is brilliant.
