The interesting thing isn't that it's a Cube ripoff; better movies have had worse ripoffs. The interesting thing is that the algorithm-age version of Cube can't be about a faceless corporation and a pointless experiment - it has to be about YOUR personal trauma, tailored exclusively to YOU, and have an ANSWER. And honestly, Google is scarier than this.

Ripping off the same basic plot as a series that's already rehashed its own ideas eight times over is like waiting until 1990 to jump on the slasher bandwagon. "Escape Room" brazenly repurposes the same ideas into a current fad that seems too ripe for marriage to actually strike me as clever. Original or not, I'm always keen on some good entertainment, but this didn't have much of that either.

A little bit Saw, a little bit Hunger Games, supposed to be but none Sherlock. They tried to do something original but they just mixed things up. Besides, over used cliches like smart Asian guy or murderer black guy. Ending was even worse and I'm mad they called Downtown from Petula Clark a terrible song. How dare you?

Escape Room lies halfway between 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Cube' with regards to both plot and tone. I enjoyed the design, cinematography and music, all of which came together to set the pace and make for an engaging film. The plot aims for 'Cabin in the Woods' territory, though falls flat in that regard. The cast is pretty good for the most part, though I still have mixed feelings towards Miller's character. Watchable, but heavily flawed.

The movie starts off strong but slowly loses steam until the completely terrible ending that ruined any interest I had in the story or movie.

I am a sucker for the whole "strangers locked in a room" shtick. Escape Room did not disappoint me. However the most brilliant thing in the movie is the unnamed lawyer that got Ben out of vehicular manslaughter.

For the most part, Escape Room is a really fun movie that is a joy to watch, but thankfully, it's slightly better than just "fun". The riddles are pretty great, the camerawork sometimes impresses, production design is particularly great - but it's not a deep or meaningful plot and it feels very serialized already. Take that as you will.

Might be rich coming from someone who has never been in an escape room, but this was kind of like a less violent "Saw" film. Some of the set pieces and puzzles are fine, but it doesn't really work because of the overall messy plot. I also wasn't a fan of how it started.

Inventive production design and a likeable cast make this a fun watch despite lacking dramatic complexity. At least this is a cut above the many trivial, nasty gore-fests that dominated cinema for a while - and you'll get more out of it if you avoided that cycle. It's more like a CUBE throwback/update, without the horror part. PSA if you're photosensitive that there's some egregious strobing lighting ruining one of the (otherwise cool) penultimate scenes - directors please stop doing this!

It's pretty solid with the excitement and thrills for the most part. You get some annoying stereotypes but they bother you less because it does kill off some unexpected characters. The riddles and puzzles are pretty nice and they keep you invested in the characters finding the answers. The thing that fails it is the ending, which is a shame, because you could have done so much more with just seeing the whole escape room -thing through and somehow it would have felt more satisfying that way.

Pretty fun, with better camerawork and set design than you’d expect. I also enjoyed the high energy techno score it used during the more tense moments. The script does need some work though. The dialogue isn’t great, and leans too much into forced one liners and jokes. Not to mention the ending feels rushed and too intentionally open ended. Not bad to scratch the itch left by films like Cube, but the writing knocks it down a bit.

Surprisingly enjoyable, a good sense of tension, suspense and character building. Falls apart a bit at the end, but a solid watch.

So this is like SAW but without the goreor the direction by Wan. The puzzle took a little longer to solve. You could tell off the hop which characters would make it the longest given that only a couple have background stories.

I've done a fair few escape rooms, and at the very least the puzzles in this were fairly imaginative. The story and characters, however, are straight out of the box, no nuance whatsoever.

As so many have already suggested, this movie is basically a toned-down version of Saw or Cube movies - meaning, unlike Saw and Cube series that can use gore to make people look away from the absurdity of those films, this movie has no effective way of hiding it. However, I was still able to enjoy this movie quite a lot, mostly thanks to likable and relatable characters. As for the ending, I am not perfectly sure if I liked it or not - but I am sure I will be looking forward to the sequel.

Escape Room is not a very good escape room. The clues are all there: the puzzle box from Hellraiser, the moving rooms from Cube, the victims with shared backstories from Saw V. But they don't add up to anything. Some of the cast must die and so they do, and others must live until they don't. Would You Rather had Jeffrey Combs, Final Destination had Death. This has neither. Maybe Deborah Ann Woll is better than this. Maybe not.

Very cool underrated movie! I mean, of course the idea has been done, but this was a very very cool version of it. Acting wasn't great, but excellent story!

Yeah, this formula is a bit out of date. Even the Escape Room gimmick can't add much the that awfully cliché ending. The plane? Really..

This movie was a fun thriller. Even though it was completely ridiculous, it was a good time. The characters are endearing enough to care about. The kills pack an emotional punch. They also do a great job of building a mythology for future films.

Decent to solid performances, bits of clever humor, and some beautiful set designs are the major pros of this movie, alongside notably strong performances by Labine & Ann Woll. However, clunky writing and a third act that rapidly falls apart combine to effectively kill the movie and any goodwill that it builds up during the early runtime. It could have been much better, but ultimately winds up being little more than a disappointment, and a vehicle for a sequel nobody asked for.

Should have just called it Saw IX. I enjoyed it for exactly what it was, people trying to escape rooms before it kills them. It's serviceable, brisk and never boring.

Saw lite was okay. Some of the puzzles were pretty good, but I found the acting and dialogue to be sub par and often took me out of it. 5.4. Watch for the intense rooms if you like these types of flicks (I tend to) and try not to cringe too hard at the script.
